摘要:
The disclosed invention is a method of recovering hydrocarbons through parallel horizontal wells by use of steam and water injection. Steam is injected into two parallel horizontal wells to stimulate the formation and then the second horizontal well is converted to a production well. About the time of steam breakthrough at the second well, the steam injection at the first well is converted to water injection, production is suspended from the second well, and steam is injected through the second and third wells. After a suitable period of stimulation time, the third well is converted to a producing well, steam injection is continued through the second well, and water injection is continued through the first well.

A well completion and the method therefor for a wellbore which extends generally horizontally of a subterranean layer comprised primarily of unconsolidated sand particles which hold a viscous hydrocarbon. The completion includes an elongated perforated liner which is positioned in the wellbore. The liner is substantially surrounded by a gravel pack which functions to limit the amount of sand particles which are carried from the subterranean layer into the liner in response to the introduction of a flow of a hot stimulating fluid into the substrate.

Method for producing viscous hydrocarbon products such as heavy crude oil or bitumen from tar sands, which products must be thermally converted into flowable condition. A discrete vertical subsection of a productive subterranean layer is marginated by a pair of spaced apart vertical wells and a horizontal well that lies substantially horizontal to the vertical wells. Controlled, pressurized flows of a heating medium such as steam are introduced to one of the vertical wells and to the horizontal well, whereby to establish a controlled thermal front. The latter is progressively urged by the pressurized steam, through the discrete vertical subsection and toward the other of the vertical wells at which hydrocarbon emulsion is produced.

A method of recovering hydrocarbons from underground formations by employing a modified inverted 5-spot well pattern, which comprises drilling four substantially horizontal wells located along each of the four sides of an inverted 5-spot vertical well pattern, injecting an oil recovery fluid through the central injection well, producing hydrocarbons and other fluids through the vertical corner production wells, ceasing production through the vertical corner wells, and producing hydrocarbons and other fluids through the horizontal wells.

A high temperature reservoir is preconditioned by injection of cold water until a zone around the injection well reaches a temperature suitable for multiphase generation conditions. A subsequent carbon dioxide injection creates a multiphase slug near the wellbore region. The multiphase slug is propagated through the reservoir by continued injection of CO.sub.2 or water alternating with gaseous CO.sub.2.

The invention is a method of recovering hydrocarbons from an underground formation by employing a modified 5 spot or 9 spot well pattern which contains a substantially vertical central well and four substantially horizontal wells, each having one end located relatively near the center of a substantially rectangular well pattern and the other ends located relatively near each of the corners of the well pattern. Preferably, the well pattern will also contain four substantially vertical corner wells located approximately at the four corners of the substantially rectangular modified 5 spot or 9 spot well pattern.

The disclosed invention is a method of recovering hydrocarbons by employing a seven well pattern comprising five horizontal production wells and two vertical injection wells. Four of the horizontal wells form the four sides of a substantially rectangular pattern with the fifth horizontal well aligned on a diagonal running between two opposite corners of the substantially rectangular pattern formed by the first four horizontal wells. Two vertical injection wells are approximately located near the center of the two substantially triangular patterns formed by the five horizontal wells.

Method and apparatus for thermally stimulating bitumen and other viscous hydrocarbon products from a subterranean formation in which the product is held. A plurality of wells are formed in the layer, which wells extend from the surface into a generally horizontal direction through the productive subterranean layer. The respective wells are spaced vertically apart whereby a thermal stimulating fluid such as steam can be selectively injected into discrete segments of the layer. Such injection will achieve the most effective sweeping action by the stimulating fluid through the productive layer. There results an orderly downward flow of the produced product and a more uniform and efficient distribution of heat in the stimulated formation.

A method based on an orifice flow equation is provided for determining both the quality and the mass flow rate of steam flowing in a line, such as to an injection well in steam flooding operations for recovery of petroleum. A sample of the steam is drawn off from the steam line through an orifice and is condensed and collected. The mass of sample collected and the time to collect it give the mass flow rate of the sample. Pressure and temperature measurements at the sample line orifice together with the measured mass flow rate of the sample and with known constants are used in the orifice flow equation to derive the sample steam quality. The line steam also flows through an orifice, with pressure and temperature measurements thereon. The desired quality of the line steam is the same as the derived quality of the sample steam, since care is taken to make them the same. The orifice flow equation is used again, substituting the derived sample steam quality for the line steam quality, together with the temperature and pressure measurements at the steam line orifice and with known constants, to derive the desired mass flow rate of the line steam.

Method for forming a gravel pack in-situ about a horizontal well in a sandy formation. The gravel pack is formed in two separate steps so that part of the pack will function as a foundation for slidably inserting and supporting the well liner. Thereafter, the remainder of the pack is completed about the liner by introducing a gravel slurry that accumulates on the foundation and about the liner.
