    Abstract: A display device is used in conjunction with: (1) optical sensors to collect information about ambient conditions in the environment of a viewer of the display device; and/or (2) privacy element identification and detection mechanisms (PEDMs) to collect information about the presence, orientation, and/or type of privacy elements being used in conjunction with the display device. For one embodiment, a processor in communication with the display device may create a view model based, at least in part, on the predicted effects of the ambient environmental conditions and/or presence of privacy elements being used in conjunction with the display device on the user's viewing experience. The view model may be a function of gamma, black point, white point, privacy element orientation and/or type, backlighting, field of view, number of viewers, color offset, or a combination thereof. The view model is also referred to as an ambient/privacy model.

    Abstract: Systems, methods, and devices for adding contextual matte bars to format image data to another aspect ratio are provided. For example, a method may include receiving image data of a first aspect ratio into a processor. The processor may receive a characteristic of a destination display of a second aspect ratio, an indication of ambient lighting, an indication of a characteristic of the image data, or any number of these factors. The processor may add matte bars to the image data to cause the image data to be formatted to the second aspect ratio. The appearance of the matte bars may depend on the factors received by the processor. The formatted image data with these contextual matte bars then may be sent from the processor to the destination electronic display.

    Abstract: Lossless image compression using differential transfers may involve an image compression unit receiving image data for an image in a sequence of images and transmitting the image data such that image data for at least some image tiles is transmitted using lossy compression due to resource limitations. The image compression unit may then receive image data for a subsequent image in the sequence and determine that the image data for at least some tiles does not change relative to the image data for corresponding tiles of the previous image. The image compression unit may then transmit image data in a manner sufficient to create lossless versions of tiles for which lossily compressed image data was sent previously.
