The present invention faces the problem of network scenarios where there is no user differentiation, and where sessions established through an IP Multimedia Subsystem always proceed in the same way regardless user categories and regardless whether a user has accessed through a fixed or a mobile network. To this end, the present invention provides for a new method for dynamically configuring a Proxy Call Session Control Function of the IP Multimedia Subsystem from a Policy Control Rules server responsible for installing control rules to authorize media flows at an entity in the bearer layer. This entity in the bearer layer may be a Policy and Charging Enforcement Point of a PCC architecture, whereas the Policy Control Rules server may be a Policy and Charging Control Rules of the PCC architecture.

A subscriber server routes a terminating call in a network that includes a circuit switched (CS) network, a packet switched (PS) network, and an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). The server receives a request for routing information in relation to the terminating call from a CS node in the CS network. A determination is made at server based on whether a UE associated with the terminating call is registered in the IMS and the UE has access to the PS network. The server instructs the CS node to route the terminating call in the CS network when the UE is not registered in the IMS or when the UE does not have access to the PS network. The server instructs the CS node to send the terminating call to the IMS for handling when the UE is registered in the IMS and when the UE has access to the PS network.

The invention relates to a method of establishing a session between client user terminals accessing IP Multimedia Subsystem, IMS, networks. At least one of the IMS networks implements the use of Quality of Service, QoS, preconditions, and at least one of the client user terminals does not use QoS preconditions. The method includes receiving, at an inter-working function, IWF located in one of the IMS networks, an IMS session initiation request originated by an originating client, the request indicating a terminating client for the session. A decision is made, based on the session initiation request, that one of the originating client and the terminating client is not using QoS preconditions. A set of QoS preconditions is inserted into a procedure for establishing the IMS session on behalf of the client that is not using QoS preconditions. Session establishment is completed only after QoS resources complying with the set of QoS preconditions have been established.

Network nodes for an access network and a home network of a first UE are described for use when routing an originating call from the first UE in the access network including an IMS network. A network node receives a SIP INVITE message associated with the originating call from the first UE, and including a called party number associated with the call. It determines whether the first UE is visiting the access network and whether the called party number is associated with the access network. A query to a database is performed, the database comprising a plurality of called party numbers, as to whether the called party number is allowable for use in the access network when the UE is visiting and when the called party number is associated with the access network. Instructing the home network to route the originating call to the access network when a response from the query indicates the called party number is allowable for use in the access network. The home network receives the instruction and routes the originating call to the access network for further processing.

Methods and systems taught herein provide for authentication information for authenticating a user terminal to be shared between a network entity that supports IMS-AKA authentication of the user terminal and a network entity that supports GBA-AKA authentication of the user terminal. Sharing authentication information between these entities allows all or part of the authentication information generated for IMS-AKA authentication of the user terminal to be used subsequently for GBA-AKA authentication of the user terminal, or vice versa.
