Abstract: Embodiments disclosed herein are directed to intraocular lens systems having a plurality of materials therein, with at least some of the materials having a diffraction pattern therein and an electrically-modifiable index of refraction collectively configured to selectively alter an effective focal length of the intraocular lens system. Methods of modifying a focal length of an intraocular lens system are also disclosed.

Abstract: Methods and systems for monitoring compliance of a patient with a prescribed treatment regimen are described. Patient activity is detected unobtrusively with an activity sensor at the patient location, and activity data is transmitted to a monitoring location. Patient speech detected during use of a communication system such as a mobile telephone by the patient may also be used as an activity signal. Patient activity and/or speech is processed at the patient location or monitoring location to identify activity parameters or patterns that indicate whether the patient has complied with the prescribed treatment regimen. The activity sensor and other components at the patient location may be incorporated into, or associated with, a cell phone, computing system, game system, or vehicle system, for example. The system may provide a report to an interested party, for example a medical care provider or insurance company, regarding patient compliance with the prescribed treatment regimen.

Abstract: A method of determining a layout for a surface covering includes receiving, with a tool system, layout data that is based on data associated with a surface to be covered with a surface covering, and providing an indication of a pattern of a plurality of covering members included in the surface covering. The layout data provides an indication of a cutting pattern for the surface covering. The cutting pattern is determined based at least in part on a minimum number of surface covering members required for a selected design of the surface covering members.

Abstract: Described embodiments include a computer-implemented method, device, and computer program product. A computer-implemented method includes electronically receiving a previously prepared estimate of fees and costs to deliver a diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a particular disease, illness, injury, or other physical or mental impairment (hereafter “healthcare service”) to a particular patient. The computer-implemented method includes electronically receiving data at least partially indicative of the healthcare service provided to the patient to date. The computer-implemented method includes estimating probable fees and costs incurred to date in providing the healthcare service to the particular patient. The estimating is responsive to the received data indicative of at least part of the healthcare service provided to date. The computer-implemented method includes outputting in substantially real time information indicative of the probable fees and costs incurred to date in view of the previous estimate of the fees and costs for providing the healthcare service.

Abstract: According to various embodiments, an array of elements forms an artificially-structured material. The artificially-structured material can also include an array of tuning mechanisms included as part of the array of elements that are configured to change material properties of the artificially-structured material on a per-element basis. Abstract: A hands-free intercom may include a user-tracking sensor, a directional microphone, a directional sound emitter, a display device, and/or a communication interface. The user-tracking sensor may determine a location of a user so the directional microphone can measure vocal emissions by the user and the directional sound emitter can deliver audio to the user. The hands-free intercom may provide privacy to the user. The hands-free intercom may prevent an eavesdropper from hearing the user's vocal emissions, for example, by canceling the vocal emissions at the eavesdropper's ear. The directional sound emitter may deliver out-of-phase sound to cancel the vocal emissions. The hands-free intercom may also, or instead, cancel ambient noise at the user's ear. The hands-free intercom may measure or predict a filtration of the sound to be canceled and compensate for the filtration when canceling the sound.

Abstract: A system for warning of protruding body parts of a medical vehicle occupant includes a sensor, a feedback device, and a processing circuit. The sensor is configured to generate sensor data based on a position of the occupant, and the processing circuit is configured to determine a contour of the medical vehicle, detect a protruding extremity of the occupant based on the sensor data and the contour, and generate a warning using the feedback device, where the warning is based on the detected protruding extremity.
