摘要： An idler roll in a round baler has a number of belt-engaging portions spaced along its length, certain of which portions are of larger diameter than others so that the belts which wrap around the roll and are driven at a constant speed by other mechanism in the baler have a tendency to slip on some of the surfaces due to differences in peripheral speeds of such surfaces, which aids in maintaining the rolls polished and trash-free. A second idler roll has its own set of spaced, enlarged diameter portions, such portions on the second roll being in staggered relationship to those on the first roll so that the net differential in belt tension around the areas of large and small diameter is zero.

摘要： The mechanism for expelling residue from regions of entrapment within the baler includes a series of flat, peripherally corrugated, powered rotary elements projecting edgewise into the spaces between adjacent belts that bound the region in which the residue collects. The elements are mounted on a transverse shaft outside of the residue collecting region and across the outer face of the belts and are driven in such a manner that the residue engaging portions thereof move in a direction generally opposite to that of the proximal belts. Cylindrical hubs projecting laterally from opposite sides of each element underlie the adjacent belts to control slack in such a manner that any such slack is caused to accumulate on the upstream side of the axis of rotation of the elements rather than in the immediate vicinity of the elements, thus preventing injurious climbing of the belts onto the expeller elements.

摘要： An inexpensive square baler is provided with an arcuate baling chamber and a plurality of spaced apart plunger elements shiftable about a kidney-shaped, closed loop path of travel. The baling chamber is partially defined by a horizontal table and a wrapper which have a number of common openings each corresponding to one of the elements. During a return stroke portion of the plunger elements, the latter retract out of the baling chamber and re-enter the chamber between the openings in the table to enable the chamber to accumulate significant quantities of crop materials without interference with the plunger elements during their return stroke portion thereof. A header of the baler includes an auger mechanism having members which urge the crop materials directly through an inlet of the baling chamber without the need for intermediate conveying apparatus, and the members interleave with the plunger elements during the time that the latter pick up crop materials from the table in order to substantially close the inlet of the baling chamber and reduce the amount of crop materials that would otherwise be discharged in a reverse direction through the same.

摘要： A round baler has a pickup header that is wider than the baling chamber and its inlet so that over-width windrows can be picked up by the machine in spite of its relatively narrower chamber. In order to reduce the width of the crop stream for introduction into the chamber, the machine is provided with a pair of laterally spaced apart, axially aligned, transverse stub augers that engage opposite outboard margins of the stream and converge them inwardly toward the main body of the flow. At the point where the outboard materials are discharged into the central body of the stream, a stuffer mechanism takes control of the stream and charges the materials up into the baling chamber. The augers are driven in such a direction that their front portions rotate down and under the auger shafts so that the outboard crop materials are likewise fed down and under the augers as they are converged toward the center. The inwardly augered materials are released by the augers down at the operating level of the stuffer, contributing to positive, orderly flow of materials through this region and into the baling chamber.

摘要： A tailgate-responsive clutch of a round baler tensions a drive belt of the baler for drivingly connecting the bale forming components to a towing vehicle's power source when the clutch is engaged. An actuator is coupled with the clutch to engage and disengage the clutch in response to swinging of the tailgate. Particularly, the actuator is disposed for operable connection with the tailgate when the tailgate is in the closed position, whereby the clutch is engaged, and for disconnection from the tailgate when the tailgate is out of the closed position, whereby the clutch is disengaged. The actuator includes an operating member shiftable by the tailgate to engage the clutch as the tailgate approaches the closed position, wherein the operating member has a resilient portion capable of engaging the clutch, yet also flex and yieldably maintain the clutch engaged when the tailgate is in the closed position.

摘要： The thrower is attached to the discharge end of a baler in position to receive bales successively issuing therefrom. A pair of generally superimposed conveyors of the thrower operate at relatively high speeds compared to the speed at which the bales issue from the baler, and as the leading end of each bale enters the awaiting thrower, the high speed conveyors grab the bale and propel it upwardly and rearwardly toward an awaiting receptacle such as a trailing wagon. The upper conveyor is so mounted that it clamps down in a self-actuating manner against the bale as the latter enters the thrower and makes engagement with the propelling surfaces of the conveyors, such clamping action arising from the reaction force generated by the slowly moving bale contacting the rapidly moving surface of the upper conveyor.

摘要： The reciprocating plunger of the baler has needle slots in its crop-engaging face from which accumulating crop materials are ejected during each retraction stroke of the plunger by stationary, horizontally extending probes telestationary, horizontally extending probes telescopically received by the plunger. Consequently, the slots are maintained clear of any debris which would otherwise interfere with the smooth, trouble-free operation of tying needles of the baler as they periodically sweep across the bale chamber and through the needle slots at certain, preselected intervals in the baling cycle. The crop expelling probes are hollow and open along their lowermost extremities to permit the admission thereinto without interference of crop feeding fingers which introduce successive charges of crop materials up into the bale chamber from a loading duct below the latter in timed relationship with reciprocation of the plunger.
