Abstract: A filter assembly for authenticating a filter cartridge includes a filter housing and an optical receiver mounted to the filter housing. A controller uses the optical receiver to receive a filter identification signal from an optical emitter positioned on the filter cartridge, obtains a reference filter identifier from a database, compares the filter identification signal to the reference filter identifier, and determines that the filter cartridge is authentic if the filter identification signal matches the reference filter identifier
