A method of forming an orientation film of a liquid-crystal display device having two electrode plates and a liquid-crystal cell between the two electrode plates includes the steps of forming an organic film on a partial or overall surface of at least one plate of the two electrode plates and radiating accelerated ions containing neutral atoms to the partial or overall surface of the organic film coated on the plate. The organic film consists of liquid-crystal molecules. The radiation is done for etching the organic film and orienting the liquid-crystal molecules in a unidirectional manner. The angle of incidence of the accelerated ions is defined as 40.degree. to 80.degree. with respect to a normal line of the plate. It results in offering even orientation of liquid-crystal molecules included in the liquid-crystal display device.

A magnetic head vertical movement device for a magnetic-optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus for use with a disk cartridge, within which a magneto-optical disc is accommodated. The device includes a vertical movement drive mechanism for a magnetic head. The vertical movement drive mechanism carries out the vertical movement of the head between a first position where the magnetic head is caused to carry out the recording of information signals when the holder is located at a falling position, a second position above the first position, at which the head is located when the recording and/or reproduction unit is in a non-recording state, and a third position above the second position, at which the magnetic head is located when the holder is located at a rising position. The device avoids contact between the disk cartridge and the magnetic head at the time of insertion and withdrawal of the disk cartridge. The device also reduces the movement quantity of the magnetic head within a range between the position where recording is carried out and the position where the recording and/or reproducing apparatus is in the non-recording state in order to realize a magneto-optical recording and/or reproducing apparatus with a thin structure.

The rear substrate comprises a glass plate, and the front substrate comprises a fiber plate. The fiber plate comprises a plurality of optical fibers of which axes are perpendicular to the plane determined by the liquid crystal layer.
