摘要: A chip bin for wood chips in a continuous digester system includes internal steaming that is controlled in response to both the interior temperature across the level of chips in the bin, and the level of chips in the bin, so as to substantially prevent cool, non-condensible gas-laden chips from accumulating at the top of the chip column in the bin, and to substantially prevent steam blow-through. The temperature probe used in the chip bin has a temperature sensing portion with a length of about ten to twenty feet instead of the conventional five foot length, and extends across the level of the chips to a position about five feet below the level of chips. Control of steam added to the bin is provided utilizing a controller which controls the position of one or more valves in one or more steam conduits, each valve having multiple open positions and a closed position. A vacuum and pressure relief device is disposed in a non-condensible gases vent from the bin which minimizes the potential for gross gas flow variations across it. The relief device includes a solid interior peripheral portion of the vent, a gate mounted for pivotal movement by a pivot shaft, and a casing which is a cylindrical sector (having a sector angle of about 30.degree.-60.degree.) in which the gate pivots. The casing is mounted in the solid interior peripheral portion and a brush seal is provided between the gate and the cylindrical sector casing.

摘要: A system and method for feeding comminuted cellulosic fibrous material such as wood chips to the top of a treatment vessel such as a continuous digester provide enhanced simplicity, operability, and maintainability by eliminating the high pressure transfer device conventionally used in the prior art. Instead of a high pressure transfer device the steamed and slurried chips are pressurized using a single vane slurry pump in series with a centrifugal slurry pump both of which are located at least thirty feet below the top of the treatment vessel and for pressurizing the slurry to a pressure of at least about 10 bar gauge.

摘要: In a cellulose pulp handling vessel having a first diameter material storing or treating portion above a second diameter discharge which is at least 20% less than the first diameter, reduced compression of the material and reduced power requirements of an agitator (if used), compared to prior art constructions are provided. A first transition, preferably a substantially smooth interior surface substantially frusto-conical transition, is provided between the first and second diameters. A second single-convergent transition may be provided above the first transition. A rotating agitator with at least two arms and associated paddles may be mounted for rotation in the transition about a substantially vertical axis for agitating the material in the transition. If desired, the transition may be moved, such as with a vibrator or oscillator. The invention is particularly suitable for pulp digesters and impregnation vessels.

Recirculation loops may be established associated with one or all of the slurry pumps to facilitate startup. A static flow splitter may be provided to split the flow from the last pump to two or more digesters.

摘要: The sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity of kraft cooking liquor during kraft cooking of cellulose pulp is selectively increased. After treatment in a first treatment zone in which impregnation or kraft cooking takes place using a kraft cooking liquor having a first sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity, black liquor is extracted from the material, liquid is withdrawn from the material and dilution liquid is added to the withdrawn liquid and the withdrawn liquid with dilution liquid is reintroduced. In a second treatment zone after the first zone a second kraft cooking liquor is introduced having a second sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity greater than the first sulfide ion concentration and sulfidity (typically by about 20-50%), including by manipulating controlling the flow rate of extraction and the flow rates of withdrawal of liquid and addition of dilution liquid. The pressure of the continuous digester is controlled in a unique manner that avoids disruptions to the column of pulp continuously moving downwardly in the digester, anywhere in the digester, but particularly avoids non-uniform, unstable material in the countercurrent washing zone. The pressure is controlled by withdrawing liquid from, and introducing liquor into, the digester at at least one additional extraction-dilution loop aside from the main extraction of the digester and the wash dilution liquid introduction mechanism below the wash screens. Pressure can also be maintained (e.g. at about 130-170 psi) by also controlling the amount of wash dilution liquor, and by varying the extraction flow.

摘要: A chip feeding system for a continuous digester provides for a greater rate of delivery of chip slurry to the digester, and is much less expensive than conventional chip feeding systems, typically being only 40-50% of the height of the conventional system. An atmospheric vessel may be connected at the bottom thereof to a slurry pump which pumps the chip slurry to a conventional high pressure feeder. A recirculation loop for returning liquid from the feeder to the vessel may include an atmospheric level tank, and a liquid cooler. The vessel may have one dimensional convergence and side relief, and instead of a conventional cylindrical chip bin, the chip bin may have a hopper having two transitions with one dimensional convergence and side relief. The chip bin also may be at atmospheric pressure so that no low pressure feeder between the bin and vessel is necessary. Alternatively, the vessel may be pressurized while an atmospheric-pressure level tank is provided, the high pressure feeder being mounted directly at ground level.

摘要: A vessel is constructed with (preferably substantially stationary) screen surfaces which minimize compaction of comminuted cellulosic fibrous material, and allow springback of the material, as it flows downwardly. A slurry of wood chips, sawdust, or pulp is passed downwardly past one or more screen surfaces, which have a number of parts, including at least a first perforated part through which liquid is extracted, and a substantially solid part substantially immediately adjacent and below the first part which has a step out to relieve compaction and allow springback of the material.
