A lens-fitted photographic film unit has a flash device for emitting a flash of light. A charge switch is adapted to bring the flash device into an on-state, either by rotation of a film advancing wheel, or when a shutter device is cocked. When the flash device is in the on-state, a main capacitor is charged so as to allow emission of a flash of light. In a preferred embodiment, the charge switch is initially turned on so as to keep the flash device in the on-state. In another preferred embodiment, the flash device is in the on-state while the charge switch is on, and is in the off-state while the charge switch is off, in response to the shutter device. When the lens-fitted photographic film unit is contained in a wrapper, an insulating tape is inserted between a positive electrode of the battery and a contact segment. Upon the wrapper being torn off the lens-fitted photographic film unit, the insulating tape is pulled out of the lens-fitted photographic film unit, so as to bring the flash device into the on-state.

The film after exposure is wound on a spool of the cassette. The film unit is provided with a mechanism for exposing the film in a succession of frames. An axial hole is formed in an upper end of the spool. Knurled inner teeth are formed inside the axial hole. A wind-up wheel is mounted on the film unit over the cassette-containing chamber to be externally operable for rotation. A drive shaft on the wind-up wheel protrudes into the cassette-containing chamber, and is received in the axial hole. Knurled outer teeth about the drive shaft mesh with the inner teeth on the spool. The drive shaft and spool will thus mesh with each other in any relatively rotated position thereof, which avoids loss of usable film.

First and second parts of a lens-fitted photographic film package are fastened to each other through engagement between hooks and engaging portions which are formed integrally on the first part and the second part, respectively. Holes are formed at the root of the hooks. Each hook is formed with a projection having a sloping surface which extends from the root of the hook toward an engaging surface of the hook and is inclined in a direction to occupy the space behind the hole. A stick-like tool is inserted into the hole in the direction in which the first part is pushed onto the second part to assemble the parts. The tool pushes the hook by sliding along the sloping surface of the projection and bends the hook in a direction to disengage the engaging surface of the hook from the engaging portion.

A light stop member is movable to cover or uncover the second openings upon changing the taking lens system between the relatively long and relatively short focal lengths. Upon changing the taking lens system to the relatively short focal length, the light stop member is moved to uncover all of the first and second openings so as to increase the quantity of light falling on the photoelectric element and to permit that light to fall at an increased incident angle; and, on the other hand, upon shifting the taking lens system to the relatively long focal length, the light stop member is moved back so as to cover only the second opening means while uncovering the first openings, thereby to decrease the quantity of light falling on the photoelectric element and to permit that light to fall only at a decreased incident angle.

When the stop lever is at a fast shutter speed position, a support pad is located below a lower metal plate of a synchronization switch of a flash circuit. The support pad holds the lower metal plate to limit rotation of a shutter blade, so that photography is carried out at a fast shutter speed. The synchronization switch is turned on after the exposure aperture is fully open. When the stop lever is at a slow shutter speed position, a support pad is away from the lower metal plate to obtain a slow shutter speed. It is possible to obtain a fast shutter speed by providing a light shielding tunnel with a fixed stopper to limit rotation of the shutter speed, and a slow shutter speed by providing a light shielding tunnel without a stopper.

The cassette is unloaded from the cassette containing chamber after the photo film is wound therein.
