Abstract: Systems, device, and methods related to estimating a Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of a signal are disclosed. A method of estimating an SNR includes setting a threshold of a comparator of a physical layer device to a first value, applying a signal to the comparator, and determining a first bit error number of an output of the comparator with the threshold set at the first value. The method also includes setting the threshold of the comparator to a second value that is different from the first value, applying the signal to the comparator, and determining a second bit error number of the output of the comparator with the threshold set at the second value. The method further includes determining an SNR of the signal based on the first bit error number and the second bit error number.

A method includes sampling a signal including a plurality of symbols with a plurality of different sample phases to obtain sample values of each of the plurality of symbols at each of the plurality of different sample phases. The signal is received from a shared transmission medium. The method also includes determining an edge sample phase of the plurality of different sample phases that corresponds to edges of the symbols based on the sample values. The method further includes determining a center sample phase of the plurality of different sample phases based on the determined edge sample phase, and using the determined center sample phase to determine values of the symbols.

Abstract: An apparatus may comprise processing circuitry, a first pair of terminals, and a second pair of terminals that are electrically connected to a cable. The processing circuitry may provide a periodic signal including pulses to the first terminal. The duration of each of the pulses may be at least double the time of travel of the pulses along the length of the cable. The processing circuitry may also detect a fault in the cable responsive to a received signal at the second terminal responsive to the periodic signal.

Abstract: Reducing emissions of predetermined frequencies using delay elements and related apparatuses, methods, and systems are disclosed. An apparatus includes an input terminal to receive a signal, delay elements electrically connected to the input terminal, an output terminal to provide a reduced slew rate signal, and combination circuitry electrically connected to the delay elements and the output terminal. The delay elements provide delayed signals responsive to the received signal. Respective ones of the delayed signals include delayed versions of the received signal. The combination circuitry combines the delayed signals to generate the reduced slew rate signal. Delays associated with the delay elements are chosen to reduce emissions of one or more predetermined frequencies of the reduced slew rate signal as compared to the received signal.

Abstract: Disclosed are systems and devices for interfacing media access tuning circuitry that implements collision handling or traffic shaping with a reduced media independent interface (RMII). In some embodiments, an interface circuitry manages emulated signals generated by a media access tuning circuitry in response to detecting that the emulated signals would cause incorrect operation of an RMII. Also disclosed is a physical layer (PHY) device for a multidrop network. In some embodiments the PHY device implements physical layer collision techniques and operable to communicate with a media access control (MAC) device via an RMII, where the MAC is configured for carrier-sense multiple access (CSMA), CSMA with collision detection (CSMA/CD), or CSMA with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). Also disclosed are processes for managing signaling at a PHY that implements physical layer collision avoidance (PLCA) or traffic shaping, as the case may be.
