Method of continuously casting metal strip from a casting pool of molten metal supported on chilled casting rolls such that metal solidifies onto moving casting surfaces of the rolls. The metal is austenitic stainless steel containing chromium and nickel in a ratio (Cr/Ni).sub.eq of less than 1.60 and the casting surface of each roll has an Arithmetical Mean Roughness Value (R.sub.a) of more than 2.5 microns. The heat transferring from the austenitic stainless steel solidifying on the textured surface of the moving casting surface to the casting surface at an initial peak heat transfer rate is more than 15 MW/m within the initial 20 ms of contact.

A method of casting metal strip and equipment therefor where an elongated metal delivery nozzle extending along in a continuous caster with at least one segment having a main portion adapted to deliver molten metal in the casting pool above the nip along the metal delivery nozzle and an end portion adjacent side dams having a reservoir portion with first and second passages adapted to deliver molten metal into a molten metal pool adjacent the side dams while shells are forming on the casting rolls. The first passages are adapted to deliver molten metal shallowly into the casting pool adjacent the side dams, and the second passages adapted to deliver molten metal deeper into the casting pool than the first passages adjacent the side dams to inhibit formation of skulls during the formation of the cast strip during a casting campaign.

A steel charge and slag forming material is heated in a ladle to form molten steel covered by a slag containing silicon, manganese and calcium oxides. The steel is stirred by injection of an inert gas such as argon or nitrogen to cause silicon/manganese-deoxidation and desulphurization to produce a silicon/manganese killed molten steel. Stirring of the molten steel by the inert gas injection while in contact with slag high in calcium oxide generates low free oxygen levels in the steel and desulphurization to sulphur levels below 0.009%. The slag may subsequently be thickened by lime addition to prevent reversion of sulphur back into the steel and oxygen may be injected into the steel to increase its free oxygen content to produce a steel that is readily castable in a twin roll caster.
