    摘要: A ball end mill includes an end mill body having an axis of rotation therethrough and an indexable cutter insert releasably attached to a forward end portion of the body. The insert includes a plate having front and rear faces. The front face has at least one generally arcuate first marginal ridge with the first marginal ridge serving as a respective generally arcuate main cutting edge. The front face has at least one short second marginal ridge with the second marginal ridge serving as a respective short cutting edge. The main cutting edge has a leading end portion disposed at one end thereof and intersecting the short cutting edge in such a manner that an angle defined by the leading end portion and the short cutting edge is obtuse. The front face serves as a rake surface for the cutting edges and has a marginal surface portion disposed adjacent to the short cutting edge and the leading end portion. The marginal surface portion is convexly curved so as to slope toward the rear face toward the short cutting edge. The arrangement of the first insert with respect to the body is such that the leading end portion of the main cutting edge is disposed adjacent to the axis of the body, and that the short cutting edge extends from the leading end portion beyond the axis of the body toward the rearward end portion of the body when viewed in a direction generally perpendicular to the front face.

    摘要: An insert rotary cutting tool includes a tool body of a generally circular cross-section having an axis of rotation therethrough and having an outer periphery. The cutting tool has plural groups of cutting inserts releasably mounted on the outer periphery of the body with the groups being spaced circumferentially of the body from each other. The inserts of each group are displaced circumferentially of the body and spaced axially of the body. Each of the inserts has a plurality of main cutting edges and is disposed in such a manner that one of the main cutting edges is indexed in a peripheral cutting position to serve as a peripheral cutting edge. The indexed peripheral cutting edges of the inserts are in series axially of the body as viewed circumferentially of the body. The indexed peripheral cutting edges of the inserts of each group have foremost ends disposed on a common helical line extending helically axially of the body. The helical line which the foremost ends of the indexed peripheral cutting edges of the inserts of at least one of the groups are disposed on is provided with a helix angle different from helix angles of the helical lines which the foremost ends of the indexed peripheral cutting edges of the inserts of the other groups are disposed on.

    摘要: A ball end mill includes a body, an indexable cutter insert and a clamp screw. The body has a recess formed in a forward end portion thereof and a bore formed therein and opening to a bottom face of the recess. The bore includes a cylindrical portion disposed adjacent the bottom face and an internally threaded portion greater in diameter than the internally threaded portion. The insert includes a front face, a rear face and at least two convexly curved side faces. The front face has at least two convexly curved main cutting edges each defined by the intersection of a respective one of the curved side faces with the front face. The insert has an aperture formed therethrough and extending generally perpendicular to the rear face. The insert is releasably mounted in the recess with the rear face held in contact with the bottom face in such a manner that one of the main cutting edges is indexed in a cutting position. The clamp screw includes an externally threaded portion and a cylindrical engaging portion disposed coaxially with the externally threaded portion and being greater in diameter than the threaded portion. The clamp screw passes through the aperture of the insert and is received by the bore in such a manner that the externally threaded portion is threaded into the internally threaded portion while the cylindrical engaging portion is held in engagement with the cylindrical portion.

Rakes are formed on side surfaces of the insert body connecting to the cutting edges. Each rake has an inclination such as to be closer to a center of the upper or lower surface at a position remoter from the corresponding cutting edge. Each rake is formed of a curved surface which is formed along the side connecting to the cutting edge and which is curved along the peripheral direction so as to round out in an outward direction from the insert body, and a flat surface which obtusely intersects the curved surface and connect to a ridge portion opposite from the cutting edge formed along on the side of the rake. The positions and the shapes of the curved surface portions and the cutting edges are determined on the basis of the flat surfaces and the upper and lower surfaces. The insert can be prevented from shifting and the working accuracy can be improved by accurately forming the cutting edges and other portions.

    摘要: The invention relates to a cutting insert. The cutting insert has a polygonal tabular body having a main cutting edge and a sub-cutting edge. A rake surface connected to the main cutting edge and the sub-cutting edge is composed of a plurality of consecutive component surfaces so as to present a multi-face surface which is curved and convex along the circumference of the body. The consecutive component surfaces are demarcated from adjacent component surfaces by edges lines L.sub.1, L.sub.2 which at their one end reach the main cutting edge. The intersection angles at which the component surfaces intersect the end surface connected to the main cutting edge are so varied in a stepped manner that the intersection angle of the component surface most remote from the nose portion is the smallest. The third component surface is curved along the circumference of the body so as to be convex outward, so that the portion of the main cutting edge associated with this component surface is also curved to be convex outward.

    摘要: A cutting insert is disclosed which includes a polygonal plate-shaped insert body having two opposite faces directed in the direction of insert thickness and a plurality of peripheral faces lying between the opposite faces. The opposite faces have marginal edges with at least one of the marginal edges defining a main cutting edge. The peripheral faces intersect one another to form marginal edges with one of the marginal edges defining an auxiliary cutting edge which intersects the main cutting edge. The peripheral surface which includes the marginal edges defining the main and auxiliary cutting edges includes a rake region extending along the main and auxiliary cutting edge. This rake region is formed into a stepped formation of a plurality of sections disposed adjacent to one another to define marginal edges terminating at one ends at the main cutting edge and to be convexly shaped in such a manner that an angle defined between a respective section and one of the opposite faces which extends from the main cutting edge decreases stepwise in a direction away from the nose portion. At least one of the marginal edges of the sections has the other end extending to the marginal edge defined between the peripheral faces. Moreover, an insert cutter which employs the aforesaid insert is also disclosed.

    摘要: A cutting tool is disclosed which includes a tool body having a mounting portion to be secured to a machine tool and having a plurality of insert receiving recesses formed therein. A plurality of cutting inserts are releasably attached to the insert receiving recesses, respectively. The tool body has a nitrided hard layer formed on a surface thereof. Furthermore, a clamp member used in the tool preferably has an abutment surface to be held in abutting contact with the insert or other parts and a chip-contacting surface with which cutting chips produced during cutting operation are brought into contact. The chip-contacting surface is defined by a nitriding hard layer formed on a precision-cast unglazed surface, and has a surface which is left without finish-working. Furthermore, a method for producing a cutting tool which includes a tapped hole formed therein and having an inner surface defining an unnitrided portion is disclosed. In this method, a plug is first threaded into the tapped hole. Subsequently, the tool body is subjected to nitriding treatment to form a hard layer on the surface of the tool body, and the plug is subsequently removed from the tool body.
