Abstract: An aerosol-generating system is provided, including: an aerosol-generating element; a housing including an upper surface, a lower surface, and a plurality of regions; an interface element including a plurality of contact sensing elements, each contact sensing element being configured to generate an input signal responsive to that contact sensing element detecting contact with the upper surface at or near one of the plurality of regions; and a circuit configured to receive the input signals from the plurality of contact sensing elements and to enable a first function of the aerosol-generating system responsive to a first plurality of the input signals satisfying a first criterion, satisfaction of the first criterion being part of a multi-step authentication procedure, the first criterion including the circuit receiving a predefined number of the input signals simultaneously. A method of operating an aerosol-generating system including an aerosol-generating element is also provided.

Abstract: An aerosol-generating device is provided, including: a cavity to receive an aerosol-generating article including an aerosol-forming substrate, the cavity including a base, and the base including at least one air aperture; an induction heating arrangement including a susceptor arrangement and an induction coil, and being arranged at least partly surrounding or forming the cavity; and a thermally insulating element arranged between the susceptor arrangement and the induction coil, the thermally insulating element being sealingly attached to the base so as to prevent lateral airflow in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the device into the cavity at the base of the cavity, and one or more sidewalls of the susceptor arrangement are permeable and configured for lateral airflow to enter the cavity in the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the device.

The device includes a main body defining a cavity and at least one opening configured to removably receive one of the first and second cartridges in the cavity; an electrical power supply and a controller configured to control a supply of electrical current from the power supply to the heater, to detect whether the first or second cartridge has been received within the cavity based upon a resistive load of the respective heater, and to control the supply of electrical current to the heater according to either the first or the second heating profile in response to a detected cartridge.
