Abstract: The process for manufacturing lubricating grease according to the parent Specification (in which lubricating oil is thickened with a metal saop of a fatty acid having from 12 to 22 carbon atoms in the molecule and there is added from 2 to 20 per cent by weight of the total composition of a metal salt of a heterocyclic carboxylic acid) is modified by the complete or partial substitution of tall oil acids for the C12-C22 fatty acid. Suitable heterocyclic carboxylic acids are furoic acid and thiophene carboxylic acid. The salt of the heterocyclic carboxylic acid may be prepared as in the parent Specification by the Cannizzaro reaction on the corresponding aldehyde. In the case of sodium furoate (which is the preferred salt) the furfural may be added to the tall oil and the soap and salt prepared together in situ by the action of sodium hydroxide, or the furfural may be present as an impurity in commercial tall oil. In this latter case the amount may be adjusted to form the requisite proportion of sodium furoate. Preferred proportions are 2-10 per cent, particularly 3 to 7 per cent of salt and 8 to 15 per cent of soap. The lubricating oil may be a mineral oil of viscosity from 35 to 150 S.U.S. at 210 DEG F or 50 to 1,000 S.U.S. at 100 DEG F. Synthetic oils may also be used. Antioxidants, oiliness agents, corrosion inhibitors and extreme pressure compounds may also be added. In an example (all parts by weight) 10 per cent of furfural and 30 per cent of mineral oil of viscosity S.U.S. at 210 DEG F are charged into a grease kettle and 3.18 per cent of caustic soda added as a 33.4 per cent aqueous solution. After completion of reaction, 15 per cent of tall oil (acid No. 183.2 and saponification No. 185.2) is added and neutralized with 2 per cent of caustic soda added as a 40 per cent aqueous solution. The mixture is heated to 400 DEG F and 38.82 per cent of the same mineral oil added in small portions. Finally 1 per cent of phenyl alpha naphthylamine is added and the grease allowed to cool.
