    Abstract: A waveguide optical element which includes a plurality of optical waveguides provided on a substrate having an electro-optic effect includes: a plurality of signal electrodes controlling light waves propagating through the optical waveguides; and a plurality of ground electrodes provided so as to interpose each of the signal electrodes therebetween, in which at least one of the ground electrodes includes a first layer and a second layer formed on the first layer, the second layer is formed such that a distance between the second layer and the signal electrode adjacent to the second layer is larger than a distance between the first layer and said signal electrode adjacent to said second layer, and a thickness of the ground electrode which includes the first layer and the second layer is 25 μm or more.

    Abstract: Provided is an optical modulator in which low-voltage drive and a stable modulation characteristic are secured over a wide bandwidth. An optical modulator includes: a substrate 10; an optical waveguide (not shown) formed in the substrate 10; a modulation electrode (a signal electrode 11 and a ground electrode 12) for modulating light waves propagating through the optical waveguide; and an external signal line (not shown, only a connection connector 4 is shown) which is provided outside the substrate and supplies a modulation signal to the modulation electrode, in which an impedance value of the modulation electrode in an active region S in which an electric field formed by the modulation electrode is applied to the optical waveguide is set to be lower than an impedance value of the external signal line, and an impedance adjustment part 21 having an impedance adjustment function with respect to mainly a modulation signal in a low-frequency area and configured of a lumped-constant circuit, and an impedance matching line L having an impedance adjustment function with respect to mainly a modulation signal in a high-frequency area are disposed between the external signal line and the active region of the modulation electrode.

    Abstract: An object is to provide a light modulator capable of highly accurate bias control by maintaining main output characteristics and monitor characteristics in an appropriate relationship and matching a bias point determined using monitor output and an optimal bias point of main output. The light modulator includes an optical waveguide formed in a substrate having a thickness of 20 μm or less, in which the optical waveguide includes a Mach-Zehnder waveguide and an output waveguide for guiding signal light from a multiplexing portion of the Mach-Zehnder waveguide and outputting the signal light outside the substrate and monitoring means that monitors signal light or radiated light. Leaked light-removing means for removing some of the radiated light propagating through the output waveguide from the output waveguide and emitting the radiated light outside the substrate is provided in the light modulator.

    Abstract: An object of the present invention is to provide an optical waveguide element module where the bonding wires can be prevented from disengaging or disconnecting so as to provide high reliability. Another object is to provide an optical waveguide element module that can be made compact and where an increase in the manufacturing cost can be minimized. An optical waveguide element module having: a waveguide substrate 1 on which an optical waveguide (not shown) and control electrodes (E1 to E4) for controlling light waves that propagate through the optical waveguide are formed; external substrates (21 to 24) having wire circuits (TM1, C1), which are connected to control electrodes electrically, disposed proximity to the waveguide substrate; a housing 3 in which the external substrate and the waveguide substrate are arranged; and terminals (T21 to T24) which are connected to an external electric circuit (not shown) for supplying electrical signals to the control electrode or deriving electrical signals from the control electrode provided with the housing, wherein relay electrode pads (CP1, CP4) which are electrically isolated from both of the wiring circuit and the control electrode are formed in any portion of the waveguide substrate 1 and the external substrates (21 to 24), and at least one bonding wire (W21, W22, W41, W42) is connected from a control electrode to the terminal or from the wire circuit to the terminal via the relay electrode pad .

    Abstract: An optical modulator includes a relay substrate having signal conductor patterns that connect input signal terminals and signal electrodes of an optical modulation element and ground conductor patterns, and a housing that accommodates the optical modulation element and the relay substrate. Regarding at least one signal conductor pattern, the two ground conductor patterns sandwiching the signal conductor pattern are formed in an asymmetrical shape in a plan view in a rectangular connection area including a signal connection portion at which the signal conductor pattern and the input signal terminal are connected. The connection area is centered on the at least one signal conductor pattern in a width direction, and has a width equal to a distance to the nearest adjacent signal conductor pattern and a height equal to a distance from an end of the signal connection portion farthest from a signal input side to the signal input side.
