Abstract: A storage system includes a media player including a preamplifier that is adapted to provide data access to a storage cartridge lacking an independent read/write preamplifier. The media player couples to the storage cartridges across an interconnect, and the storage cartridge is adapted perform data access operations responsive to signals received from the media player through the interconnect.

Abstract: A data storage library includes multiple storage cartridges arranged on a rack; read/write control electronics integrated within a media player assembly; and actuation means for achieving relative movement between media player assembly and the multiple storage cartridges in the rack to allow the read/write control electronics within the media player assembly to selectively couple with and provide data access to at least a subset of the multiple storage cartridges.
