Abstract: Embodiments receive an indication of initiation of communication from a controlled-environment facility resident, using a communications device, with another controlled-environment facility resident. A determination is made whether the residents are allowed to communicate and the communication is established between the communications device and another communications device in use by the other resident. The residents may be residents of different or the same controlled-environment facility(ies). The communication may be monitored and/or a database of residents that communicate with one another may be compiled. The communication between the controlled-environment facility residents may proceed, even despite a determination or predetermination that the residents are not allowed to communicate with one another, so the communication may be monitored. At least one of the residents may be charged for the communication, such as by charging a community communications account maintained to the benefit of at least one of the residents.

Abstract: During a voice call from a resident of a controlled-environment facility to another party, a selection of an option by the resident or the other party to convert the voice call to a video communication between the resident and the other party may be made. Whereupon, a controlled-environment communications processing system may confirm that the other call party agrees to convert the voice call to a video communication, and may query a controlled-environment facility administration and management system to confirm that the resident may take part in a video communication. Thereafter, such as in response to confirmation both parties agree to convert the voice call to a video communication and/or that the resident may take part in a video communication, a video communication link may be established between a communication device in use by the resident and a communication device in use by the other party.

Abstract: Systems and methods for implementing location-based services for controlled-environment facilities are disclosed. The location-based services may be used to restrict the ability of residents to communicate with non-residents that are located within geographic areas defined with the location-based service, such as within a specified proximity of the facility. A resident of the controlled-environment facility requests a remote communication with a non-resident that is utilizing a mobile device, such as a cellular phone, smart phone or tablet device. The request for the remote communication may be allowed based, at least in part, upon the physical location of the mobile device as determined based on the location of cellular towers in use by the mobile device and based on a GPS (Global Positioning System) location provided by the mobile device.
