A method and an apparatus for creating a holographic stereogram are provided for canceling noises localized to infinity and offering a high-quality hologram. The creating method is executed to display an image corresponding to a coordinate location on the hologram recording medium on the display unit, condense the laser beam transmitted through the display unit as an object beam at the coordinate location of the hologram recording medium, and apply part of the laser beam before transmission through the display unit as a reference beam onto the hologram recording medium, for sequentially forming stripped or dotted holographic elements on the hologram recording medium. The creating apparatus includes a first diffuser panel located close to the display unit, a mask, and a second diffuser panel, the latter two of which are located immediately before the hologram recording medium. The mask has an opening corresponding to the width of the holographic element. The second diffuser panel serves to one-dimensionally diffuse the object beam transmitted through the opening of the mask. The first diffuser panel is relocated at the exposure of each holographic element.

In generating a parallax image string used for generating a holographic stereogram, the image quality of a stereoscopic image generated from the parallax image string is to be maintained as the time needed in imaging the parallax image string is shortened. To this end, an optimum number of image frames of each of plural parallax image strings are photographed in agreement with the localized position of the reproduced image of a generated holographic stereogram. The image processing is executed for equating the numbers of frame images of the parallax image strings. The parallax image strings having the equal number of the frame images of the parallax image strings are synthesized by, for example, chroma key synthesis to generate a new parallax image string.

For reproducing an image from a holographic stereogram 80 of an edge lit system, a holographic stereogram 80 is arranged on a lateral side of a cylindrically-shaped light-introducing block 81 and a reproducing illuminating light beam 82 is illuminated on the holographic stereogram 80 via the light-introducing block 81. A reproduced image 85 is produced by a diffracted light beam obtained on diffraction of the reproducing illuminating light beam 82 transmitted through the holographic stereogram 80.

A gamma characteristic of the medium is determined based on the reproduction gradation pattern, and a modulation pattern produced using easily separable luminance values determined based on the gamma characteristic is displayed on a spatial light modulator to record data in multi-values into the medium. Thereupon, the data are oversampled and recorded, and a block of the reproduced data is decoded depending upon a sequence of relative luminance levels of pixels in the block to decode the entire reproduced multi-value data.

The present invention provides a hologram apparatus for recording interference fringes formed from reference light and signal light optically spatially modulated by a spatial light modulator on a hologram recording material or picking up an image of reproduction signal light produced by irradiating illumination reproduction light on the hologram recording material by means of an image pickup device to obtain a reproduction image signal. The hologram apparatus includes a matching data acquisition section, an arithmetic operation section, and a positioning control section. The matching data acquisition section directly picks up an image of the signal light optically spatially modulated with a pixel matching pattern displayed on the spatial light modulator by means of the image pickup device to obtain a reproduction image signal. The arithmetic operation section performs predetermined arithmetic operation using a luminance value of the reproduction image signal. The positioning control section moves a relative position between the image pickup device and the spatial light modulator in response to a result of the arithmetic operation of the arithmetic operation section.
