摘要: There are provided a method and apparatus for embedding a second level code into a first level code of an optical disc by data modulation rule variation. The apparatus includes a multi-level, varying rule based modulator (199) for modulating the first level code to obtain a channel bit stream representative of the first level code and having the second level code embedded therein. The multi-level, varying rule based modulator modulates the first level code using modulation rules respectively having different statistical properties of pit-land length distributions that preserve a readability of the first level code and that are distinguishable at readout of the optical disc. The different statistical properties represent binary or multilevel data of the second level code.

摘要: A multi-level information reproducing method is provided which can increase the degree of separation between distributions of cell boundary values to thereby improve the accuracy of reproduction. Specifically, in a method of reproducing multi-level information recorded on a track of an optical information recording medium by virtually providing cells at equal intervals and by varying a width of an information pit in a track direction or an area of an information pit, a cell boundary value (a value obtained by sampling a reproduced signal when a center of a light spot is located at a boundary of cells) is corrected based on cell center values of two cells adjacent to the boundary (a value obtained by sampling a reproduced signal when the center of the light spot is located at a center of a cell), and the multi-level information is reproduced based on the corrected cell boundary value.

摘要: A method of generating an efficient sequence of “nm+m−1” level random numbers, each sub-sequence of “m” successive random numbers thereof having a different pattern, including the steps of generating a sequence of n-level random numbers based on an initial value, a number being generated at a time, determining whether a pattern of a sub-sequence is “used”, if the pattern of the sub-sequence is “used”, setting a different value to the initial value, if the pattern of the sub-sequence is not “used”, accepting the newly generated number and marking the pattern as “used”. All of the steps are repeated until all of “nm” patterns are exhausted. Since the newly generated number is rejected if the pattern of the sub-sequence is “used”, the sequence becomes the shortest one of which all of “nm” patterns are exhausted.

The invention further relates to an encoder to carry out this method, a decoder to decode the stream of bits relating to the binary channel and a record carrier provided with the encoded signal in the form of optically detectable marks. By means of the invention for example non-user data can be added that are used to prevent unauthorized copying.

摘要: The present invention separates MTF into a plus frequency region and a minus frequency region and uses the plus frequency region and the minus frequency region to thereby enable an effectively usable frequency region to be doubled in effect. Digital information to be recorded on an optical disk medium is recorded as independent signals of, respectively, a light beam reflected or diffracted forward and a light beam reflected or diffracted backward with respect to a direction of traveling of a track on the optical disk medium. At the time of producing an optical disk medium, digital information is divided into two pieces, a complex modulating signal is generated by changing a plus frequency component and a minus frequency component according to the pieces of the divided digital information, and a laser beam is modulated on the basis of the complex modulating signal. At the time of reproducing the optical disk medium, part of the digital information is decoded from a light beam reflected or diffracted forward with respect to a direction of traveling of a track, and another part of the digital information is decoded from a light beam reflected or diffracted backward.
