A communication apparatus includes a first detection circuit which detects a call signal, and a second detection circuit detects information of a partner station sent between call signals. A memory circuit stores information of a communication system of the partner station in association with the information of the partner station. A reading circuit reads the information of the communication system for the detected information of the partner station from the memory circuit in accordance with the information of the partner station detected by the second detection circuit at the time of the detection of the call signal and executes the communication protocol in accordance with the read information of the communication system.

In facsimile-communicating an original when the Internet selection state in an operation unit is set to “automatic selection”, the original is communicated by selecting the e-mail-based Internet for an A4 original size, and the session-based Internet for a B4 or A3 original size. At the same time, the original information is transmitted in accordance with the transmission mode of its own apparatus, the encoding method determined based on the reception capability of a facsimile apparatus at a reception destination, and the receiving-side output original size and resolution.

An image data transmission apparatus reads image data from a document placed on a document tray via a line sensor or the like, and transmits the obtained image data to a receiving apparatus either after rotation of the image data or without rotation of the image data wherein whether rotation is performed or not is determined in accordance with the receiving capability of the receiving apparatus and also on the document setting position. If the rotation is required, the reading operation is performed in such a manner that the line density in the secondary scanning direction in the reading operation will become the line density in the principal direction after the rotation so that no degradation in the resolution and processing efficiency occurs.

An image processing apparatus having a function for rotating image data stored in a memory by 90° while preventing deterioration of image quality. Upon image reading, if the line density in a subscanning direction is lower than the pixel density in a main-scanning direction, the line density is raised close to the pixel density. The reading control is performed in accordance with the possibility of 90° rotation of image in a destination apparatus or a specific size of an original image. This attains efficient use of image memory.

A data communication apparatus has the capability of properly requesting another data communication apparatus to transmit a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting and has the capability of properly receiving the notification message thereby preventing an unacceptable request from being sent and a useless notification message from being returned. When a request for relay broadcasting is issued via a sub-address signal, a selection is made as to whether or not to request transmission of a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting. Depending on the selection made above, a request is issued for transmission of a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting as well as a request for relay broadcasting. When the data communication apparatus receives a message representing whether or not a relaying apparatus to which the request for relay broadcasting has been issued has the capability of transmitting a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting, the data communication apparatus requests, in accordance with the notification message received from the relaying apparatus, the relaying apparatus to return a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting. When the selection is made so as to request transmission of a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting, if the relaying apparatus does not have the capability of transmitting a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting, a message is displayed to notify a user that a notification message as to the result of relay broadcasting will not be received.

The invention provides a facsimile apparatus capable of smooth transmission without trouble in a receiving unit, even in case of two-side reading of a long original. According to the invention, in case the reading of two-side original is selected, the sub scanning length of the original is detected an the transmission control is modified according to the sub scanning length. In case the sub scanning length of the original exceeds a predetermined length, the user is caused to select either to (1) transmit such original as a one-sided original to the receiving unit with informing the receiving unit of that, or (2) to transmit the original information corresponding to a predetermined length on the front side of the original as the front side information and transmit the remaining original information on the front side as the backside. In case such one-side transmission is selected, after the transmission of the original information of the front side, the original information of the back side is subsequently transmitted as a one-sided original to the receiving unit with informing the receiving unit of that, but, in case such two-side transmission is selected, after the transmission of the original information of the front side, the original information on the back side corresponding to a predetermined length is subsequently transmitted as the front side and the remaining original information on the back side is transmitted as the back side.

A light collecting optical system wherein the position where light is collected is scanned in the optical axis direction by using a wavefront converting element capable of changing power without using a mechanical device, and aberration occurring during the scanning is canceled by using the wavefront converting element to minimize the degradation of light collecting performance due to the scanning in the optical axis direction. In a laser beam collecting optical system having an optical system for collimating a laser beam emitted from a laser light source and an objective for collecting the laser beam on a specimen, when the position where the laser beam is collected is changed in the optical axis direction in such a manner that the relative distance between the objective and the specimen does not change, a wavefront shape formed in an area covering at least 90% of the laser beam at or near the pupil position of the objective is changed by a wavefront converting element placed at or near a position conjugate to the objective pupil position so that predetermined conditions are satisfied.

Even if a signal line is momentarily disconnected while data communication, such as image data communication, is being performed by using, for example, an ITU-T Recommendation V.34 modem, communication is suitably continued. A main controller (CPU) determines the operating state (status) of a modem having the following mode. In this mode, the receiving operation of an image signal is automatically shifted to control signal communication upon detecting a pattern of a training signal. The main controller enables the above mode if it determines that the receiving status of the modem is not normal. It is thus possible for the modem to shift from the receiving of an image signal to control signal communication when the signal line is momentarily disconnected.
