Abstract: An integrally bladed rotor, including: a plurality of blades integrally formed with a hub as a single component, each of the plurality of blades having a blade body extending from the hub to an opposed blade tip surface along a longitudinal axis, wherein the blade body defines a pressure side and a suction side, and wherein the blade body includes a cutting edge defined between the blade tip surface of the blade body and the pressure side of the blade body, wherein the cutting edge is configured to abrade a seal section of an engine case. A method for manufacturing an integrally bladed rotor includes: forming a plurality of airfoils integrally with a hub to form a single component, each of the plurality of airfoils having an opposed tip surface with respect to the hub extending along a longitudinal axis, wherein each of the plurality of airfoils defines a pressure side and a suction side; and forming a cutting edge between the tip surface and the pressure side of each of the plurality of airfoils, wherein the cutting edge is configured to abrade a seal section of an engine case.

Abstract: A method of determining wear of a seal element includes rotating a seal plate relative to the seal element and such that the seal plate and the seal element form a rotational sealing interface. The seal element includes an insert embedded in the seal element. A portion of the seal element is worn with a sealing face of the seal plate. The insert is contacted with the sealing face of the seal plate. A portion of the insert is worn to create a wear particle of the insert. The presence of the wear particle in a lubrication oil is sensed with an oil monitoring system.

Abstract: A rotary tool includes a shank, cutting portion, coolant inlet, coolant outlet, and channel system. The cutting portion is connected to and extends from the shank. The cutting portion includes a cutting edge. The coolant inlet and the coolant outlet are disposed in the shank. The channel system is contained in the rotary tool and is a closed circulation loop system such that the coolant is contained within the channel system as the coolant is circulated within the rotary tool. The channel system includes a delivery path and a return path. The delivery path is fluidly connected to the coolant inlet and includes a shape corresponding to a shape of the cutting edge. The return path is fluidly connected to the coolant outlet and to the delivery path at a location in the cutting portion of the rotary tool.

Abstract: A blade includes a blade body extending from a blade root to an opposed blade tip surface along a longitudinal axis. The blade body defines a pressure side and a suction side. The blade body includes a cutting edge defined where the tip surface of the blade body meets the pressure side of the blade body. The cutting edge is configured to abrade a seal section of an engine case. A method for manufacturing a blade includes forming an airfoil with a root and an opposed tip surface along a longitudinal axis, wherein the airfoil defines a pressure side and a suction side. The method also includes forming a cutting edge where the tip surface of the airfoil meets the pressure side of the airfoil.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for machining parts with variable stiffness includes determining, by a controller, a chatter-lobe plot of a cutter assembly. A preliminary tool path is developed by the controller. Virtual machining of a blank part using the preliminary tool path is performed by the controller. A chatter-lobe plot of the virtually machined part is determined by the controller. A dynamic chatter-lobe plot using the chatter-lobe plot of the cutting tool assembly and the chatter-lobe plot of the virtually machined part is determined by the controller. A chatter-free rotational speed of the cutting tool from the dynamic chatter-lobe plot is determined by the controller. A machining apparatus, controlled by the controller, uses the determined chatter-free rotational speed of the cutting tool to machine a blank part.
