    Abstract: A system includes a machine tool that includes a cutting tool, a fluid subsystem that provides fluid to the cutting tool, and at least one processor that executes instructions that cause the at least one processor to: obtain a signal indicative of a load on the cutting tool, establish a first value of at least one parameter of the fluid based on the signal, obtain a second value of the at least one parameter that is based on a simulation, determine a difference between the first value and the second value, and adjust a state of a device of the fluid subsystem based on the determined difference.

    Abstract: A fan blade for a gas turbine engine is disclosed. The disclosed fan blade includes an airfoil having a leading edge, a trailing edge, a convex side, a concave side and a distal tip. The leading edge, trailing edge, convex side and concave side of the airfoil is at least partially coated with an erosion resistant coating. The distal tip of the airfoil is coated with a bonded abrasive coating. The bonded abrasive coating engages the abradable coating disposed on the fan liner and, because of its low thermal conductivity, reduces heat transfer to the distal tip of the fan blade. The reduction in heat transfer to the distal tip of the fan blade preserves the integrity of erosion resistant coatings that may be applied to the body or the airfoil of the fan blade.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for machining parts with variable stiffness includes determining, by a controller, a chatter-lobe plot of a cutter assembly. A preliminary tool path is developed by the controller. Virtual machining of a blank part using the preliminary tool path is performed by the controller. A chatter-lobe plot of the virtually machined part is determined by the controller. A dynamic chatter-lobe plot using the chatter-lobe plot of the cutting tool assembly and the chatter-lobe plot of the virtually machined part is determined by the controller. A chatter-free rotational speed of the cutting tool from the dynamic chatter-lobe plot is determined by the controller. A machining apparatus, controlled by the controller, uses the determined chatter-free rotational speed of the cutting tool to machine a blank part.
