The ignition system comprises an ignition head (12) for igniting one end of a smoking article which is held by a smoking machine, a sensor (18, 20) for detecting a distance between the end of the smoking article and the ignition head (12) in a direction parallel to the axis of the smoking article, and control means (21) for automatically adjusting ignition conditions in dependence on the detected distance. The sensor (18, 20) is arranged to detect the distance across a range of offset positions of the end of the smoking article in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the smoking article, which range is greater than the width of the end of the smoking article.

摘要： Process and apparatus for preparing a plurality of filter holders for use in a smoking machine both include assembling a plurality of such filter holders, each holder having upper and lower portions constructed and arranged for fitting engagement with one another. A filter element is placed between the upper and lower portions of each filter holder, and each holder is loosely assembled by fitting the upper and lower portions together with the filter element therebetween. The loosely assembled filter holders are placed on a portable tray having a plurality of individual compartments, one for each loosely assembled filter holder. The portable tray is placed within a press for pressing the filter holder portions together to thereby simultaneously seal the upper and lower portions of each filter holder together with the filter element therebetween.

A scannable laser having a laser light output at an intensity and frequency makes a scorch mark on the seam of each cigarette paper without perforating the cigarette paper. A software control system for the scannable laser is programmed to cause the laser to scan over the cigarettes in the jig to etch and make a circumferentially-oriented line segment mark no longer than 1.5 millimeter and no wider than 0.5 millimeter on the cigarettes at a predetermined position along the length of the cigarettes.

摘要： A smoking machine includes a pair of parallel disks alternately rotatable about a common axis and each provided with a number of holders for cigarettes or other smokable articles. Means is provided for automatically lighting the cigarettes. The holders are spaced apart at equal intervals in circular paths respectively centered on the axis of the disks. A shuttle valve is mounted at a smoking station between the two disks and adjacent to each to receive a continuous stream of smoke from the cigarettes in sequence and channel it to a desired location, at which there may be, for example, a holder for an experimental animal. The valve shuttles between the two disks to take a puff on each cigarette as it arrives at the smoking station. The cigarettes carried on one disk are thus puffed alternately with those carried on the other. ''''Reverse puffing'''' is employed: i.e., chambers are placed over the lighted ends of the cigarettes and pressurized, so that the smoke is delivered at atmospheric pressure. While a puff is being taken on any given cigarette on one of the disks at the smoking station, the other disk is rotated by an indexer to bring the next cigarette to the smoking station, which is puffed in the same way. The process continues for a number of rotations of the disks, until the cigarettes are smoked to the desired extent, whereupon they are automatically ejected.
