    Abstract: A selectively adjustable tool post for holding a plurality of tools for rapid and selective positioning of any one of the tools in operative position with respect to a work piece on a machine tool. The tool post is formed with base means preferably formed as a plate adapted for securement at a selective location on a bed portion of the machine tool for any given set-up of the machine tool with respect to the shaping of any particular work piece. A body block is rotatably mounted over the base means, and interlocking means in the form of spline teeth are formed on the surfaces between the body block and base plate. The spline teeth on the body block and the spline teeth on the base plate though biased apart may be selectively forced into engagement by means of selectively actuatable setting means in the form of a handled nut engaging a tube extending from the base plate through the body block, whereby tightening of the nut will force the spline teeth on the block into engagement with the spline teeth on the base plate to fix the block at a selected position. The body block has a plurality of sides formed with undercut channels slideably receiving an undercut projection on a tool holder and a cam is eccentrically positioned and rotatable in the channel to wedge the tool holder in a fixed position, with the tool holder height adjustable in the channel. In use, the tool post body block with one or more tool holders secured in the channels of the block may be quickly and selectively positioned with the tool held by the tool holder arranged to engage the work piece, with release of the setting nut permitting rotation of the body block to bring another tool into a working orientation with respect to the work piece.

    Abstract: A positioning system for an indexable slide or turret comprises a bifurcated member located adjacent the turret and engageable with the teeth of a locating gear to accurately position the turret relative to the bifurcated member. The bifurcated member slides in a bore provided within a sleeve. Upon contacting a selected tooth of the gear, the sides of the bifurcated member are wedged apart by the tooth until they contact the sleeve so that each side is wedged between the tooth and the sleeve, thereby positively and accurately positioning the selected tooth of the gear and the attached tool turret.

    Abstract: THE TURRET-SHAPED HOLDER FOR A SET OF TOOLS IN A MACHINE TOOL IS INDEXIBLE BY AN APPARATUS WHICH EMPLOYS A PAIR OF CLUTCH MEMBERS ONE OF WHICH IS ROTATABLE WITH REFERENCE TO THE OTHER CLUTCH MEMBER TO THEREBY DISENGAGE A FACE GEAR ON THE HOLDER FROM A STATIONARY FACE GEAR SO THAT THE HOLDER CAN BE ROTATED TO A SELECTED ANGULAR POSITION. THE ROTARY CLUTCH MEMBER MESHES WITH A SLEEVE WHICH ROTATABLE SURROUNDS THE SHAFT OF THE HOLDER AND MOVES THE HOLDER AXIALLY IN RESPONSE TO ROTATION AND/OR AXIAL MOVEMENT OF THE ROTARY CLUTCH MEMBER. A CLUTCH IN THE VARIABLE-SPEED DRIVE WHICH ROTATES THE HOLDER WHEN THE FACE GEARS ARE DISENGAGED FROM EACH OTHER ALLOWS FOR LIMITED ROTATION OF THE HOLDER WHEN THE TEETH OF THE FACE GEARS MESH WITH EACH OTHER. A PACKAGE OF DISHED SPRINGS URGES THE FACE GEARS APART AND MAINTAINS THE CLAWS OF THE CLUTCH MEMBERS IN ABUTEMENT WITH EACH OTHER. THE SYSTEM WHICH SELECTS THE ANGULAR POSITIONS OF THE HOLDER HAS A SET OF CAMS WHICH ARE ROTATABLE WITH THE SHAFT OF THE HOLDER. SUCH SYSTEM INSURES THAT A SELECTED TOOL ON THE HOLDER IS MOVED TO ITS OPERATIVE POSITION BY THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE ROUTE SO THAT THE SHAFT OF THE HOLDER NEED NOT ROTATE THROUGH MORE THAN 180 DEGREES.
