A form-fill-and-seal (FFS) packaging machine is described wherein a zipper is attached to the package simultaneously with the sealing operation at the sealing and evacuation station. The attached zipper is thereafter welded in place at the zipper welding and cutting station. A zipper blank feeder and a channel-forming die with an impulse sealer are integrated into the sealing die of a packaging machine forming a combination work station. The zipper is installed at an existing work station and shares the existing lifting device. This enables the retrofitting of an FFS packaging machine to include a zipper attachment function without changing the footprint thereof. The combination work station forms a channel for the zipper blank between the thermoformed web and the lidstock. While the sealing die is providing a seal about the lid, the impulse sealer in the channel-forming die attaches the zipper to an initial attachment portion of the packaging film. Upon completion of the package, this initial attachment portion, if retained, becomes the tamper-indication portion of the package. Both the sealing and evacuation station and the zipper welding stations of this invention are of jacketed construction enabling the temperature control of the zipper blank throughout the installation procedures.

A method of supporting a plastic container exposed to elevated temperatures during product filling and packaging to eliminate heat and internal pressure induced distortion, internal vacuum distortion, or structural failure. Plastic containers usually have a body with exterior configuration and a sealable open mouth. The invention provides a method of hot filling, pasteurising and retort processing of conventional containers during product filling where at least a portion of the container is confined in a support casing having an interior cavity mating the exterior configuration of the container body portion. The product is then introduced into the container, and the container mouth is sealed. A positive pressure is induced within the sealed container while the container is exposed to a product processing temperature. An unsupported PET container exposed to high heat and internal pressure variations would distort or fail. However, the external mating support casing together with positive internal pressure restrains the PET container during this period of high stress and low resistance thereby preventing distortion or failure. Afterwards, by cooling the container to a casing release temperature below the product processing temperature and then releasing the container from the casing, eliminates container distortion problems.

A system for packaging of perishable food products involves initially packaging the food product in a receptacle containing an inert gas atmosphere and sealing a film to the receptacle. The inert gas atmosphere prevents deterioration of the food product subsequent to shipment from a central processing facility. The receptacle includes a sealing flange and a tab portion extending from the sealing flange, to which the film is sealed. To prepare the food product for display at a retail establishment, the tab and the film sealed thereto are removed from the package, to form an opening between the film and the receptacle. An atmosphere exchange operation is carried out through the opening, by inserting a nozzle through the opening and introducing an oxygen-containing gas into the receptacle cavity through the opening. The inert gas atmosphere initially contained within the receptacle is exhausted through the opening. Once the atmosphere exchange process has been carried out, the nozzle is withdrawn from the opening and the opening is closed by sealing the film to the receptacle. Introduction of the oxygen-containing gas into the receptacle cavity induces the desired oxygen “bloom” in a fresh meat food product, and in other food products replaces the inert gas atmosphere in preparation for display and consumption of the food product. The final configuration of the package as displayed to consumers has the same external appearance as prior art packages, leading to ready consumer acceptance while greatly enhancing product life and reducing spoilage associated with production and distribution of the food products from a central processing facility. The invention also contemplates a package and a receptacle construction for use in carrying out the described method.
