    Abstract: A cylindrical bearing housing has an axial bore therethrough and external threads. A land is formed around the circumference of the bore having a width less than the axial length of the bore. A bearing member has a bearing surface on one end accessible through one end of the bore and has shoulders on each end of the bearing member. The bearing member is fabricated to pass through the bore and to have a length such that the shoulders are spaced apart a distance greater than the width of the land. An elastic filler material is disposed between the bearing member and the walls of the bore while the bearing member is suspended centrally therein, thereby retaining the bearing member axially in the bore. The bearing housing is configured for mounting and axial adjustment in a base member. A rotating member having a pair of pivots, one each on opposite sides thereof is provided having an axis of rotation passing through the pivots. When mounted bearing assemblies are positioned so that the bearing surfaces contact the pivots, a preload is set having improved stability over wide temperature variation. In one embodiment of the bearing assembly, the elastic filler material applies a shear force against the bearing member for preloading its bearing surface against the associated pivot. In another embodiment, separate apparatus, specifically a spring member applies a force against the back of the bearing member to at least aid in preloading the bearing surface against its associated pivot.

    Abstract: In a moving-coil electrical instrument the electric coil is rotatably mounted on a spindle for angular displacement about the axis of the spindle. The ends of the spindle are located in respective bearings disposed in apertures of a frame and each bearing has a part that is angularly displaceable about the axis of the spindle between a first angular position in which the part supports the spindle and a second angular position in which that part is removable from the respective aperture. The coil is mounted on a support through which the spindle extends and carries a body to counter-balance the coil. The center of mass of this body is spaced from the plane which includes both the center of mass of the coil and the spindle axis. The support also carries a counterpoise body that is spaced from the counter-balance body about the spindle axis.

    Abstract: A method for providing enhanced stream splitting is provided by conveying a plug comprising a mixture of a sample material and carrier gas to a stream splitting means and initially dividing a leading portion of the plug during a relatively short interval of time into a measurement component and into a discharge component. The division or split ratio is automatically altered to a second value according to which the remaining and principal portion of the plug is divided by conveying the discharge component through a discharge volume which is relatively small with respect to the volume of the plug and through a flow restriction to atmosphere. The measurement component of the plug is simultaneously conveyed toward a chromatographic column. The second split ratio is thereby maintained substantially constant for the passage of the remaining and principal portion of the plug past a split station of the stream splitting means. A chromatographic apparatus in accordance with features of the invention comprises a stream splitting means, means providing a flow channel communicating between a first outlet of the stream splitting means and a separating column, and means providing a second flow channel communicating between a second outlet of the stream splitting means and a flow restrictor means which is vented to atmosphere. The second flow channel has a relatively small volume for providing that a discharge component of the plug which flows therein after splitting is rapidly vented to atmosphere. In a particular embodiment, the discharge volume is substantially less in magnitude than the volume of the plug.

    Abstract: An electric meter particularly characterized by a small number of moving parts and simplified assembly by virtue of fixed cooperating locating surfaces on the elements and sub-assemblies of the meter. A magnetic circuit including a yoke and magnet are constructed to snap into an insulating base in a predetermined position on the base. A coil assembly initially including integral elements for connection of pivot bearings or taut bands is accurately positioned for rotation on the supporting base by inserting the assembly into the base. Cooperating locating surfaces provide for accurate predetermined positioning of the axis of rotation of the coil relative to the magnetic circuit. Additional features of the meter construction reside in a direct gear drive between a zero adjust element and zero adjust knob mounted in a cover for the meter, a unique base, casing, and cover which snap together, a coil support form of unique construction and which includes motion limiting elements which limit the permissible extent of movement of the coil in the event of shock or impact to positions well within the elastic limit of the supports which mount the coil for rotation, a unique mode of terminating the end connections for the coil without the need for stripping insulation, a unique mounting arrangement for the assembled meter, a unique rear mounting scale plate which provides for easily replacing scale plates to meet the needs of the user of the meter, a meter movement of a single size adapted to be used with casings and scales of various sizes whereby the number of different parts required to form meters of different sizes is maintained at a minimum, a unique insulating material base with flexibility to permit expanding the base during assembly of the meter, and sub-assemblies, components, and elements which can be assembled in only one position and orientation to assure proper assembly of the meter.
