    摘要: A binocular apparatus body blank of sheet material and divided by fold lines includes a distal wall having a pair of spaced apart objective lens ports and two opposing lateral edges; a bottom wall extending from an edge of the distal wall and having a lateral fold line to permit the apparatus body to collapse; a top wall extending from an opposing edge of the distal wall and having a lateral fold line to permit the apparatus body to collapse; a proximal wall having an outer face and two opposing lateral edges and having a pair of spaced apart eyepiece ports and extending from an edge of said top wall opposite the distal wall; a bonding flap extending from an edge of the proximal wall opposite the top wall for bonding to the remote longitudinal edge of the bottom wall; two side walls extending from the opposing lateral edges of the distal wall, each side wall having a remote end and a lateral fold line to permit the side walls to collapse simultaneously with and top and bottom walls; and a side wall bonding section at each remote end for bonding to the outer face of the proximal wall at each the opposing lateral edge of the proximal wall. The apparatus preferably includes a nose receiving opening cut into the proximal and bottom walls, and a carrying cord port in each side wall; and a carrying cord secured within the ports.

    摘要: An overclad fiber optic coupler of the type wherein a plurality of optical optical fibers, each having a core and a cladding, are fused together along a portion of the lengths thereof to form a coupling region. Surrounding the coupling region is a matrix glass body of refractive index n3 which is lower than the fiber cladding refractive index n.sub.2. The body has an inner region adjacent the optical fibers, an outer region having a radius greater than that of the inner region, and a transition region between the inner and outer regions. The softening point temperature of the inner region is greater than that of the outer region. The coupler exhibits both low polarization dependent loss and low excess loss.

    摘要: A novel drinking cup adaptable into binoculars consisting of a stackable, truncated conical frustum shaped drinking cup having a pair of spaced apart ocular lenses on one slanted side and a pair of objective lenses situated on the opposite slanted side, with oppositely located crease folds on the cup slanted sides opposite each other and midway between the ocular and objective lens. In addition, a pair of diverging creases are placed in the cup slanted side on opposite sides of one of the lengthwise crease line, the pair of diverging crease lines such that they diverge from a common meeting point at the end of the cup having the smallest diameter to the end of the cup having the largest diameter. After use as a drinking cup, the two crease lines on opposite sides of the cup are folded to result in the cup cross-section taking on the appearance of a cylinder having an elliptical cross-section, and then the two crease lines on opposite sides of one of the oppositely located crease lines are again folded to result in an elliptical or oval shaped straight tube having equal distance between each pair of ocular lens and objective lens. The binocular is focused by holding between the thumb and a finger and pressing the resulting ellipse to vary the distance between the ocular and the objective lenses.

    摘要: A mobile self-unloading observatory is presented for transporting observation equipment such as a telescope to a remote location, with a subsequent automatic setting up the equipment for observation. The observation equipment is transported on a suspended platform that protects the equipment against shock and vibrations. At the remote location, a self-leveling telescopic pier is extended to the ground under the chassis of the observatory, and released from being held within a frame of the observatory. The telescopic pier is extended towards the platform to support the observation equipment over the ground. The transportation, the setting up, and the teardown of the equipment may be performed without having to manually handle heavy or bulky objects.
