Surrounding the coupling region is a matrix glass body of refractive index n3 which is lower than the fiber cladding refractive index n.sub.2. The body has an inner region adjacent the optical fibers, an outer region having a radius greater than that of the inner region, and a transition region between the inner and outer regions. The softening point temperature of the inner region is greater than that of the outer region. The coupler exhibits both low polarization dependent loss and low excess loss.

A one-piece blank of thin semi-rigid material, such as cardboard, formed into a series of rectangular panels hingedly connected at parallel foldlines and two trapezoidal pairs of interlocking flaps, may be easily assembled to form a foldable binocular. One panel contains a pair of objective lenses and another panel contains a pair of ocular lenses. When folded, the objective lenses, and optionally the ocular lenses, are protected from scratches and smudges by a pair of rectangular flaps formed by glueing certain panels together before assembly.

A novel drinking cup adaptable into binoculars consisting of a stackable, truncated conical frustum shaped drinking cup having a pair of spaced apart ocular lenses on one slanted side and a pair of objective lenses situated on the opposite slanted side, with oppositely located crease folds on the cup slanted sides opposite each other and midway between the ocular and objective lens. In addition, a pair of diverging creases are placed in the cup slanted side on opposite sides of one of the lengthwise crease line, the pair of diverging crease lines such that they diverge from a common meeting point at the end of the cup having the smallest diameter to the end of the cup having the largest diameter. After use as a drinking cup, the two crease lines on opposite sides of the cup are folded to result in the cup cross-section taking on the appearance of a cylinder having an elliptical cross-section, and then the two crease lines on opposite sides of one of the oppositely located crease lines are again folded to result in an elliptical or oval shaped straight tube having equal distance between each pair of ocular lens and objective lens. The binocular is focused by holding between the thumb and a finger and pressing the resulting ellipse to vary the distance between the ocular and the objective lenses.

A mobile self-unloading observatory is presented for transporting observation equipment such as a telescope to a remote location, with a subsequent automatic setting up the equipment for observation. The observation equipment is transported on a suspended platform that protects the equipment against shock and vibrations. At the remote location, a self-leveling telescopic pier is extended to the ground under the chassis of the observatory, and released from being held within a frame of the observatory. The telescopic pier is extended towards the platform to support the observation equipment over the ground. The transportation, the setting up, and the teardown of the equipment may be performed without having to manually handle heavy or bulky objects.

A deployable structure having a plurality of panel elements is provided. Adjacent panel elements are connected to one another by hinges. The hinges allow the panel elements to be placed in a stowed or folded configuration, in which adjacent pairs of panel elements are folded against one another to provide a relatively compact assembly. Biasing members can be provided to transition the deployable structure from the stowed configuration to a deployed configuration. When in the deployed configuration, the relative positions of the panel elements of the deployable structure are maintained, at least in part, by locating interface assemblies. The deployable structure may have a generally annular configuration when deployed.
