    Abstract: Systems and methods for controlling staple firing include a manipulator, a drive system, and a processor. The manipulator is configured to be releasably coupled to an instrument. The instrument has an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw. The drive system is configured to apply a force or torque to the instrument to cause staple firing to occur using the end effector. The processor is configured to monitor a force or torque applied by the drive system to cause staple firing to occur and in response to determining that the applied force or torque is outside of an acceptable range of force or torque, maintain application of clamping by the first jaw and the second jaw while suspending application of the force or torque that causes the staple firing to occur.

    Abstract: Techniques for active and semi-active damping include a system including a processor and a linkage having a first link, a second link, and a damper coupling the second link to the first link. The processor is configured to receive a movement command for moving the linkage; determine one or more first vibrations expected to occur in the linkage as a result of performing the movement command; determine a movement profile for moving the linkage to reduce the one or more first vibrations; and drive, using a drive component, the linkage to move according to the movement profile.

    Abstract: A medical device drive system can include a rotational input, a coupling member engaged with the rotational input, a first gear having an engagement feature sized and shaped to engage with the coupling member, and a second gear coupled with the first gear, the second gear coupled to a movable element. The system can have a first system state and a second system state. In the first system state the coupling member is not engaged with the engagement feature and the first gear rotates without moving the coupling member. In the second system state the coupling member is engaged with the engagement feature of the first gear and rotation of the rotational input turns the coupling member, the first gear, and the second gear to move the movable element.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for motion mode management include a computer-assisted device having an input control, a repositionable structure, and a controller coupled to the input control and the repositionable structure. The controller is configured to detect movement of the input control, control movement of the repositionable structure based on the movement of the input control, determine whether the movement of the input control is likely to include one or more components of a mode switching movement of the input control, and in response to determining that the movement of the input control is likely to include one or more components of the mode switching movement, temporarily disable mode switching in response to movement of the input control. The mode switching movement changes a mode of operation for the device. In some embodiments, the temporarily disabling prevents changing the mode of operation when the movement is a mode switching movement.
