Abstract: Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) are highly porous entities comprising a multidentate organic ligand coordinated to multiple metal centers, typically as a coordination polymer. Crystallization may be problematic in some instances when secondary binding sites are present in the multidentate organic ligand. Multidentate organic ligands comprising first and second binding sites bridged together with a third binding site comprising a diimine moiety may alleviate these issues, particularly when using a preformed metal cluster as a metal source to form a MOF. Such MOFs may comprise a plurality of metal centers, and a multidentate organic ligand coordinated to the plurality of metal centers to define an at least partially crystalline network structure having a plurality of internal pores, and in which the multidentate organic ligand comprises first and second binding sites bridged together with a third binding site comprising a diimine moiety. Particular MOFs may comprise N,N′-di(1H-pyrazol-4-yl)ethane-1,2-diimine as a multidentate organic ligand.

Abstract: Processes for making olefin copolymers, particularly ethylene-based copolymers. A process for making an olefin copolymer can include introducing an olefin monomer, at least one other olefin comonomer, and a single type of catalyst system to a tubular reactor to produce an olefin copolymer containing: a) an absolute comonomer distribution (CD) slope 90 of about 2.0 to about 30.0, an absolute CD slope 75 of about 2.0 to about 30.0, an absolute CD slope 50 of about 2.0 to about 30.0, or an absolute CD slope 25 of about 2.0 to about 30.0; b) a first long chain branching index (g′(Mz)) of about 0.30 to about 1.0; and c) a second long chain branching index (g′(Mz+1)) of about 0.30 to about 1.0. The tubular reactor can include one or more plug flow components, one or more spiral heat exchangers, and/or a recycle pump.

Abstract: A method and system for direct quantification of the concentration of biomolecules in algal biomass. The biomolecules include lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. An algae slurry is cultivated within a cultivation vessel, and algal biomass is harvested therefrom. A portion of biomass is analyzed using solvent-lipid analysis to extract lipids and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy is used to quantify the biomolecular concentration of the biomass.

Abstract: Propylene-based elastomer compositions that include a blend of a majority polymer fraction having a higher Mw and a minority polymer fraction having a lower Mw, methods of making same, and hot melt adhesives including such compositions. The polymer blend compositions can include: a major polymer fraction having a Mw of about 100,000 to about 300,000 and a melt flow rate of about 0.1 g/10 min to about 70.0 g/10 min, according to ASTM D1238; and a minor polymer fraction having a Mw of about 5,000 to about 60,000 and a Brookfield viscosity of about 500 cP to about 50,000 cP, according to ASTM D-3236 (190° C.), wherein an amount of the at least one other polyolefin comonomer in the minor polymer fraction is at least 7 wt % less than an amount of the at least one other polyolefin comonomer in the major polymer fraction.

Abstract: Processes comprising: heat treating a heavy hydrocarbon feedstock in a heat treatment unit to produce a first effluent comprising a heat treated product; at least partially removing a mixture of gas and distillate from the first effluent in a first separation unit to produce a second effluent comprising a separation bottom product; deasphalting the second effluent in a second separation unit in the presence of a first solvent to produce: a soluble product fraction comprising a first portion of the first solvent, a deasphalted oil (DAO) product, and a first pitch product; an insoluble product fraction comprising a second portion of the first solvent and a portion of the first pitch product; and at least partially removing the second portion of the first solvent from the first pitch product in a third separation unit to produce a purified pitch product.

Abstract: Hot melt adhesives may comprise linear alpha olefins (LAOs) or LAO-derived compounds as an at least partial replacement for paraffinic white oil diluents. Such adhesive compositions may comprise an ethylenically unsaturated polymer or copolymer, a tackifier, and a diluent. The diluent may comprise at least one of: one or more C18+ linear alpha olefins (LAOs) having a kinematic viscosity of about 4 cSt or less at 135° C.; one or more LAO dimers formed from one or more C18+ LAOs, the one or more LAO dimers having an internal olefin and a kinematic viscosity of about 6 cSt or less at 135° C., or one or more paraffinic hydrocarbons having an even carbon number distribution and formed through dimerization of one or more C18+ LAOs and subsequent reduction. The one or more paraffinic hydrocarbons may have a kinematic viscosity (ASTM D-445) of about 4 cSt to about 8 cSt at 135° C.

Abstract: A method for controlling the growth of a hydraulic fracture using a stress shadow generated during a hydraulic fracturing operation includes selecting a stage pair including a first stage and a second stage for which hydraulic fractures are to be generated via a hydraulic fracturing operation. The method also includes hydraulic fracturing the first stage to generate a corresponding first hydraulic fracture and controlling a magnitude of a stress shadow originating from the first hydraulic fracture by varying at least one parameter of the hydraulic fracturing operation, where the stress shadow is controlled so as to provide a second hydraulic fracture of a target fracture shape for the second stage. The method further includes hydraulic fracturing the second stage to generate the second hydraulic fracture with the target fracture shape.
