Microbicidal compositions including (a) cyanodithiocarbimate and (b) an N-alkyl heterocyclic compound; a triazole compound or salt thereof or metal complex thereof; a microbicide with an activated halogen atom or a formaldehyde releasing compound; 1,4-bis(bromoacetoxy)-2-butene; 2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole; a methylene-bis(thiocyanate); a halogenated acetophenone; a halopropynl compound; an iodosulfone; a phenol; a halocyanoacetamide compound and/or a quaternary ammonium compound are described. Components (a) and (b) can be present in a synergistically effective amount to control the growth of at least one microorganism. Methods for controlling the growth of microorganisms with the compositions are also disclosed.

Microbicidal compositions for aqueous systems are provided that include (a) a nitrogenous compound activated by an oxidant or an enzyme and (b) 1,4-bis(bromoacetoxy)-2-butene (BBAB). The components are present in a combined amount synergistically effective to control the growth of at least one microorganism. Methods for controlling the growth of microorganisms in aqueous systems with the compositions are also provided.

Compositions and methods for killing, preventing, or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms in an aqueous system or other systems are provided. The compositions can include at least one first cross-linkable polymer, at least one second cross-linkable polymer, and at least one cross-linking agent, wherein the water solubilities of each cross-linking polymer are different, such as by 10% to 100%. The compositions can further include at least one biocidal component. The compositions can be formulated to slowly release the biocidal component and/or the cross-linkable polymer, or rapidly release the biocidal component and slowly release the cross-linkable polymer. The compositions can be used to control algae.

A method for increasing the effectiveness of a biocide is described. In the method, at least one biocide and at least one diethanolamide are applied to a substrate or aqueous system subject to the growth of microorganisms. The diethanolamide is applied in an amount effective to increase the biocidal activity of the biocide. Biocidal compositions are described where the biocide and the diethanolamide are present in a combined amount effective to control the growth of at least one microorganism. Methods for controlling the growth of microorganisms on various substrates and in various aqueous systems are also described. The combination of the biocide and the diethanolamide is particularly useful as a biocide in the leather industry, the lumber industry, the papermaking industry, the textile industry, the agricultural industry, and the coating industry, as well as in industrial process waters.
