Abstract: A gas volume meter is provided for use in a breath gas measuring instrument and system, in which the volume of the gas expired by a subject, the oxygen uptake in the expired gas, and the oxygen consumption per unit weight of the subject, are periodically calculated and digitally displayed. The gas volume meter of the invention includes a disc which is rotatably driven at a rate corresponding to the volume of gas passed through the meter in a given time interval. The disc has peripheral slots, and a photoelectric scanner senses the slots to produce electric pulses whose repetition frequency is a measure of the rate of rotation of the disc.

Abstract: A reproducing system for use as a high speed magnetic tape scanning instrument to provide for the superimposing of recurring signals such as ECG complexes on a visual indicator such as an oscilloscope from signals previously recorded for long time periods by a very slow single-track magnetic tape recorder. Trigger signals are developed from the reproduction by a first playback head of the ECG signals recorded on the tape. The trigger signals are delayed a particular period to provide for control signals to control the activation of the oscilloscope sweep at the proper times to produce a stable superimposition of the ECG signals as reproduced by a second playback head spaced from the first playback head. The particular period of delay is provided electronically or electromechanically.

Abstract: An improved exercise treadmill is provided for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, and which includes a heavy multi-ply nylon belt which is driven along and around a metal plate to define the walking area. The metal plate is composed, for example, of material of high heat conductivity, and it is coated with Teflon. This results in low friction and insures low drag, regardless of the weight of the patient. An advantage of the Teflon coating is that it does not require waxing. The aforesaid plate may be coated on both sides so that it may be reversed for extended use after the Teflon coating on one surface has become worn. Additionally, the metal plate is supported by a layer of resilient sheet material mounted on a platform to give the desired resilience to the plate.

Abstract: A light weight portable exercise machine is provided for maintaining cardiovascular tone and for rehabilitation of hospital patients confined to bed. Portability and versatility of the machine are enhanced by a mounting frame which is a part of the unit. Light but sustained exercise is accomplished through pedal operation by the feet and legs of the patient while holding the hands to bars on the frame. In addition, stability is provided to the machine by a turned-up end portion of the frame, which portion is adapted to rest against the foot of the patient''s bed. A number of permanent magnets are moved into exact juxtaposition opposite other magnets in progressive settings across a modified Faraday disc at a plurality of indented positions, and these magnets, with augmented inertia from a heavy rim, serve to achieve prescription exercise amounts for prescription exercise durations automatically terminated at set limits.
