    摘要: If all original subbands are not selected for processing in conventional subband coders or decoders aliasing distortion is generated by the characteristics of their subband band-splitting filters or subband band synthesis filters. To improve sound quality in a subband decoder the decoded frequency components in the overlap region adjacent to a subband selected not to be decoded are band-limited prior to synthesis. Alternatively, in a subband coder the sound quality in a processed subband adjacent to one not to be coded is improved by band-limiting the filtering frequency overlap region between these subbands prior to coding. By thus decoding only the non-overlapping part of the subband adjacent to an omitted subband signal distortion is reduced.

    摘要: An apparatus for compressing a digital audio input signal to provide a compressed output signal. A circuit derives plural spectral coefficients from the input signal and groups the spectral coefficients into bands. A distributing circuit distributes a total available number of quantizing bits between signal spectrum-dependent quantizing bits and noise spectrum-dependent quantizing bits. A circuit determines a magnitude for each band, and, in response thereto, allocates the signal spectrum-dependent quantizing bits among the bands. This allocates to each band a number of signal spectrum-dependent quantizing bits for quantizing each spectral coefficient in the band. A circuit determines a subjectively-allowable noise spectrum and, in response thereto, allocates the noise spectrum-dependent quantizing bits among the bands. This allocates to each band a number of noise spectrum-dependent quantizing bits for quantizing each spectral coefficient in the band. A quantizing circuit quantizes the spectral coefficients in each band using a total number of quantizing bits determined by summing the number of signal spectrum-dependent quantizing bits allocated to the band and the number of noise spectrum-dependent quantizing bits allocated to the band. The distribution circuit sets the distribution ratio in response to a circuit that calculates the smoothness of the spectrum of the input signal. In this manner, optimum quantizing for both musical signals and single sine wave signals are given by a single processing operation, without the need to repeatedly adjust the quantizing bit allocation.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for processing an input digital signal in which an input digital audio signal at an input terminal 11 is supplied via a one-block delay unit 17 to a difference unit 20, an output of which is processed by noise-shaping circuit 21 and restored by a near-instantaneous compressor 26, a near-instantaneous expander 27 and an accumulator 28 so as to be fed back to the difference unit 20 to find a difference between a signal of a directly preceding sample and a signal of the current sample. The noise shaping circuit 21 modifies the spectrum of the quantization noise by taking aural characteristics, such as equal-loudness characteristics or masking characteristics, into account for diminishing the level of the quantization noise as perceived by the ear. The noise level as perceived may be reduced in a manner desirable for the sound quality without changing the existing format.

    摘要: An apparatus for encoding an input digital signal divides the input digital signal to produce frequency components of increasing bandwidth as the frequency increases, performs blocking on each of the frequency components to produce blocks of decreasing time length as the frequency increases, performs a fast Fourier transformation on each block and quantizes each block using a quantization characteristic set in accordance with a comparison of the energy of each frequency component in each block with a masking spectrum. The masking spectrum includes both a masking effect on the frequency base of the input signal and masking effect on the time base of the input signal and may further include effects of the minimum audible curve of the human hearing sense characteristic. Utilization of both the temporal and frequency masking effects permits reduction in the bit rate of the encoded signal using real time processing and without deterioration in sound quality.
