Abstract: A nitrogen-metal fuel cell comprising a cathode and an anode in spaced relationship, a first electrolyte solution contacting the cathode, a second electrolyte solution contacting the anode and an ion transfer membrane between the electrolytes to prevent commingling thereof and through which hydroxyl ions freely move. The cathode comprises an aqueous solution of nitrate and an ion transfer membrane between the solution and the electrolyte contacting the cathode.
