    Abstract: In an image forming apparatus, a black edge of a document image is emphasized, and the black edge is detected by deciding an edge from the lightness data and by deciding a black color from the chroma data. The data of cyan, magenta and yellow of a pixel at a black edge are replaced with minima of data of cyan, magenta and yellow of pixels in a prescribed region around the pixel. In order to prevent erroneous decision of a black edge, if a number of isolated pixels is larger than a threshold level, a decision as a pixel at a black edge is invalidated. Automatic exposure can be performed on a color document for correcting a background of the document obtained in a prescan. The background level of the document is determined only on pixels decided to be black. When color balance is adjusted on one of the data of cyan, magenta, yellow and black, the density is kept constant. A part of a color document is reproduced in a sheet of paper with use of different levels of an image forming condition such as edge emphasis. That is, image data on the same part of the color data are supplied repeatedly, while image forming condition on the color data are changed successively. Then, the color data of the part is formed repeatedly in a sheet of paper at different levels of the image forming condition.

    Abstract: An image forming apparatus is composed of an image holding component for holding an image, a first image forming device and a second image forming device for respectively forming a first image and a second image on a surface of the image holding component, a switching unit for switching a mode between a first mode and a second mode, the first mode being where the first image forming device and the second image forming device come into contact with the image holding component and the second mode being where the second image forming device and the image holding component do not come into contact and the first image forming device comes into contact with the image holding component, a detecting unit for detecting information concerning an image formed on the image holding component, and a modifying unit for modifying at least one of an image forming condition for the first image and an image forming condition for the second image in accordance with the information detected by the detecting unit. With this structure, the current mode is switched as necessary, so that needless wear and tear on the second image forming device is prevented. Also, the modifying unit modifies the image forming conditions as necessary, so that deterioration on a reproduced image caused by the mode switching is prevented. As a result, a high-quality image can be obtained.

    Abstract: An image detection and background processing device and method having a image reader for reading a whole document and converting the read document to a digital image data of multi value. The image forming apparatus detects the density of a background in the document based on the digital image data obtained by the image reader, sets a reference value based on the background density as well as the distribution of the digital image data, and distinguishes an image area of the document from the background by comparing the reference value and the image data so as to execute a process concerning the distinguished image area (for example, an automatic magnification selection process or an automatic paper selection process). The apparatus and method includes analysis capability for determining whether the background area can be accurately discriminated from the image area based on image data.
