Abstract: A cap for forming a sealed cavity around an end of a fastener. The cap has an inner cap terminating at an inner cap rim which surrounds an opening into a central cavity and lies in an inner cap plane around a majority of a circumference of the inner cap. An outer cap is fitted over the inner cap, the outer cap comprising an outer cap body and a skirt extending from the outer cap body to a skirt rim which lies in or slightly below the inner cap plane around a majority of a circumference of the skirt. An annular pocket is provided between the skirt and inner cap, and a flow space is provided between the outer cap body and the inner cap. The flow space is in fluid communication with the annular pocket so that it can receive a flow of sealing material and feed it into the annular pocket. The outer cap body is formed from a first material with a first elastic modulus, and the skirt is formed from a second material with a second elastic modulus which is lower than the first elastic modulus. The skirt flexes as the flow of sealing material is fed into the annular pocket so that the skirt rim lifts up to form a gap between the skirt rim and the structure which enables air to escape the annular pocket by flowing through the gap.

Abstract: A device for dispensing a sealant or other material. The device has a housing containing a chamber with a dispensing orifice at a first end and an actuation opening at a second end opposite the first end. The chamber contains a mixing paddle which can be rotated and translated back and forth inside the chamber; a piston; and a membrane with an open end in fluid communication with the actuation opening. The membrane is arranged such that it can be inflated by injecting fluid into its open end via the actuation opening, inflation of the membrane causing it to press against the piston and push the piston towards the mixing paddle and the dispensing orifice which in turn forces the material past the mixing paddle and out of the dispensing orifice.

Abstract: A cap has a body portion forming a central cavity, and an annular flange which extends outwardly from the body portion. The body portion is deformable between a first configuration in which the annular flange is inclined upwardly, and a second configuration in which the annular flange is inclined downwardly. A method includes applying a quantity of sealant to the annular flange in the first configuration; fitting the cap over the end of the fastener so that the fastener is enclosed by the cap; and turning down the annular flange such that the cap assumes the second configuration in which an annular pocket is formed between the flange and the base, and the sealant material fills the annular pocket; and bonding the cap to the structure with the sealant material.
