摘要： A copier capable of producing simplex and duplex copies includes a tri-roll inverter that employs a corrugating roll on roll return force applicator located downstream from the tri-roll input/output members. A sheet coming into the inverter is driven by a pair of the tri-rolls into a nip formed between corrugating rings mounted on the dual rolls of the return force applicator. One of the rolls has a minimal friction force and rotates continuously in the opposite direction to the incoming sheet. When the last portion of the sheet is driven into the corrugation nip, the friction force of the nip will cause the sheet to buckle into an output nip of the tri-roll members for outward movement.

摘要： A copier capable of producing simplex and duplex copies includes a tri-roll inverter that employs a spring loaded ball on roll return force applicator located downstream from the tri-roll input/output members. The input nip of the inverter includes the combination of a smooth roll and a foam roll. This combination corrugates lightweight papers for penetrating the ball on roll nip. A sheet driven by the input nip into the inverter penetrates the ball on roll return force applicator nip. When the last portion of the sheet leaves the input nip, the friction return force of the applicator nip will cause the sheet to buckle into an output nip formed by the foam rolls of the tri-roll members for outward movement.

摘要： A smart sheet sensor control system and method compensating for degradation of an optical sensor. A reference voltage trigger level is periodically adjusted in a manner biased toward a null state indicating an absence of a sheet of paper or document in a paper location. The reference voltage trigger level is periodically adjusted by a microprocessor to always lie within a window range between the null state value and an activated state value indicating a presence of the sheet in the paper location. Since the adjustment is periodic, the microprocessor need not be a dedicated microprocessor and may be used to adjust the reference voltage trigger level corresponding to several sensors respectively sensing the presence or absence of a sheet of paper at several different locations. A service signal may be provided via a copier controller to a display on the copier and/or to a telecommunications device to be forwarded to a vendor service department when the window range between the null state and the activated state is less than a predetermined value so that maintenance may be performed on the sensor prior to a complete failure of the sensor system. The smart sheet sensor control system and method may be implemented in an electrophotographic printing machine sensing sheets of paper or other documents at various locations within the machine.

摘要： In a document handler in which simplex or duplex document sheets are fed from a document tray overlying the copier platen of a copier to one side of the platen, with a single inversion and a document side edge registration and deskewing system in the simplex path; a unidirectional, continous loop, but non-circular duplex document inversion path integral with and partially in common with the simplex path is provided at the same side of the platen. This duplex path has first and second inverting path segments separate from the simplex path, and a third path segment utilizing the simplex path. Duplex documents to be inverted are fed into the first path segment, which extends up from the platen outside of the simplex path and on through the second path segment to connect with the simplex path upstream of the side edge registration system and passing through the single inversion in the simplex path so that duplex documents being inverted are returned to the platen inverted from their previous orientation after re-registration by the same document side edge registration system as is used for simplex documents. A self-actuating platen edge guide, and two RDH modification versions, are also disclosed.

摘要： An improved dual mode document handler for a copier, in which documents may be either loaded into a document stacking tray overlying the copier imaging station platen and recirculatively fed thereto for pre-collation (RDH) copying, or, alternatively, fed into a semi-automatic document handling (SADH) path slot adjacent thereto on top of the document handler, conveniently face up and feeding downwardly therein for gravity assistance in loading documents into the slot. This SADH input path non-interferingly crosses over (intersects) the document restacking return path to the tray of RDH path. The SADH input path merges into the recirculating document path just after the stacking tray feeder/separator output and prior to the side registration feeder and turn baffles feeding to the copier platen (at a point in common with the duplex document inverting return path) to commonly utilize the same feeder and path, thereby providing alternative SADH/RDH document feeding at little additional cost in the same integral low cost document handler, and with a desirable SADH document input location, even though the document handler feeds and returns documents from the same side of the tray and platen.

摘要： A sheet feeding apparatus with a sheet support tray, a rear vacuum plenum chamber adapted to acquire the rear portion of a sheet, a front vacuum plenum chamber positioned over the front of the sheet and adapted to acquire the front portion of a sheet, a sheet transport associated with the front vacuum plenum to transport a sheet acquired in a forward direction and an air knife positioned at the rear of the stack of sheets to inject air between the trailing edge of the top sheet in a stack and the remainder of the stack. The trail edge of a sheet in a stack is separated by the air knife, acquired by the rear vacuum plenum then acquired by the front vacuum plenum and transported in a forward direction. As the trailing edge clears the rear vacuum, the rear vacuum, which together with the air knife is continuously actuated, acquires the next sheet in the stack. In this way, the speed of the sheet feeder can be very high since sheets are separated and acquired by the feeder simultaneously with transporting them off the stack. Preferably, the air knife includes preacquisition fluffer jets to initially loosen the top few sheets in the stack and lateral converging air streams to facilitate separation of the topmost sheet in the stack. The front vacuum plenum includes sheet acquisition tunnels over virtually its entire sheet contact surface in order to accommodate a wide variety of sheet sizes.

The vacuum feedhead includes a vacuum plenum with a plurality of perforated feed belts entrained around it. The feed belts have a diamond shaped knurl pattern on their sheet engaging surfaces in order to obtain a higher pressure differential across the sheet material during sheet acquisition.

Preferably the xerographic engine module is a monochrome printer, with a separate fuser module, and the ink jet printing engine module is a plural color ink printer, and there is also a separate document imaging station module, mounting in additional module mounting guides in the base unit, to provide an easily changeable variety of different imaging products and shared components.

摘要： A dynamic edge guide for use in a side edge registration system includes a moving belt having raised ridges thereon that form a channel into which a substrate fits. Substrates moved through the registration system by a transport device are side registered against the belt by a scuffer mechanism with the transport device and belt moving at approximately the same speed.
