摘要： A data processing system and method are described for permitting a server computer system to remotely initiate a boot block recovery from a failure of a client computer system to successfully complete execution of POST. The client computer system is coupled to a server computer system utilizing a network. The client computer system fails to successfully complete executing POST. Thereafter, the server computer system transmits a recovery POST code to the client computer system utilizing the network. The client computer system executes POST utilizing the recovery POST code, wherein the client computer system is capable of successfully completing execution of POST utilizing the recovery POST code received remotely from the server computer system.

摘要： A data processing system and method are described for permitting a server computer system coupled to a client computer system utilizing a network to remotely modify operation of the client computer system's network hardware. A counter is established within the client computer system for counting a plurality of network events. A counter threshold is established. Upon the counter reaching the counter threshold, the client computer system's network hardware transmits a message to the server computer system including network statistics information. The network statistics information includes an indication of the counter reaching the counter threshold. In response to a receipt of the message, the server computer system determines whether to modify the operation of the client's network hardware. In response to a determination to modify operation of the network hardware, the server remotely modifies operation of the client's network hardware.

摘要： A system and method for connecting a computer terminal (e.g., a personal computer) to a data transmission network with the appropriate settings for connection obtained from the network if the terminal has been moved and the settings are not appropriate for the new location. The system and method involve detecting that the terminal has been removed from the data transmission network, and, if the terminal has been moved, checking to determine whether the previous settings are appropriate for use in the new location. If the settings are appropriate, then the previous settings are used; if not, new settings for the terminal are obtained from the network, using a program such as the IBM's Dynamic Host Connection Program (DHCP), with the details on the settings (or connection) maintained at both the network and the computer terminal and updated when a new or changed connection to the data transmission network is made.

摘要： A data processing system and method are described for determining a physical location of a client computer system. The client and server computer systems are coupled together to form a local area network. Identifying information is associated with a tag. The client computer system transmits a wireless query signal to a physical region. In response to the tag being located within the physical region, the tag receives the wireless query signal. In response to a receipt of the query signal by the tag, the tag transmits a reply signal. The reply signal includes the identifying information. In response to a receipt of the reply signal by the client computer system, the physical location of the client computer system is determined utilizing the identifying information.

The user is able to move the wireless keyboard, the movement of the keyboard resulting in a changed size of the visible portion of the display screen. After the keyboard is repositioned, the visual items are re-displayed on the visible portion of the display screen so that the items fit in the changed size of the visible portion of the display screen.

摘要： A data processing system and method are disclosed for protecting data within a hard disk drive included within a data processing system. Data is generated. A signature value is provided which is stored in a signature device. The signature device is capable of being inserted into and removed from a computer system. A textual description of the data is created. The data is encrypted utilizing both the signature value stored on the device and the textual description. The encrypted data is then stored on the hard disk drive. The data processing system does not permanently store encryption keys.

摘要： A method and system for enabling security attestation for a computing device during a return from an S4 sleep state. When the computing device enters into the S4 state following a successful boot up, the attestation log is appended to the TPM tick count and the log is signed (with a security signature). When the device is awaken from S4 state, the BIOS obtains and verifies the log created during the previous boot. The CRTM maintains a set of virtual PCRs and references these virtual PCRs against the log. If the values do not match, the return from S4 state fails and the device is rebooted.

The computer system requires the entry of a password in order to operate the computer system. A wireless signal is transmitted to the computer system such that computer system receives the signal. In response to a receipt of the wireless signal, the requirement that a password be entered is temporarily deactivated. The computer system is thus operable without the entry of the password.

摘要： A method and system are described for booting a remote client computer system included within a data processing system. The data processing system includes a server computer system and at least one client computer system. A physical region is specified within which the client computer system resides. A wireless signal is transmitted to the physical region and is received by the client computer system. A determination is made whether the wireless signal includes a specification of the client computer system. If the wireless signal includes a specification of the client computer system, the client computer system boots and establishes an association with the server computer system as a client of the server computer system.
