摘要: An ambient illumination shielding apparatus for an imaging-based scanner adapted to read direct part marking (DPM) bar codes. The shielding apparatus includes an illumination shield extending from a housing of the scanner and extending along at least a portion of a path of travel of an aiming pattern generated by an aiming apparatus of the scanner. The shield passes illumination within a predetermined wavelength range and impedes passage of illumination outside of the predetermined wavelength range. The predetermined wavelength range of the shield includes a wavelength range of the aiming pattern generated by the aiming apparatus. The shielding apparatus further includes a filter disposed in proximity to an imaging system of the scanner and passing illumination within a predetermined wavelength range to the pixel array and impeding the passage of illumination outside of the predetermined wavelength range. The predetermined wavelength range of the filter includes a wavelength range of an illumination system of the scanner.

摘要: A two dimensional symbol is decoded by forming a binary image that includes the symbol. The binary is used to generate symbol margins for use in digitization. By using the binary image to determine the symbol margins, margins can be located efficiently and in the presence of symbol contrast variation caused by irregularities in the marked surface or light source angles. Digitization proceeds based on the determined margins.

摘要: A two dimensional symbol is decoded by forming a sub-sampled image that is used to generate symbol margins for use in digitization. The sub-sampled image is based on local levels of contrast in the symbol. By using a sub-sampled image derived from local levels of contrast in the symbol to determine the symbol margins, margins can be located efficiently and in the presence of symbol contrast variation caused by irregularities in the marked surface angles. Digitization proceeds based on the determined margins.

摘要: The disclosure relates to optical image readers having a two-dimensional image sensor and an auto-discrimination function. The auto-discrimination function identifies optical codes by type for pixel clusters and, in some cases, tilt angle and start/stop coordinates. The clustered pixel data is passed to an appropriate decoder identified by the auto-discrimination function based upon a likelihood that the cluster contains an optical code of a particular type. Line drawing techniques provide for adequate sampling of the clustered pixel data code based on the tilt angle of the code relative to a image sensor array.

摘要: Document information is encoded in a graphic symbol applied to the document. The symbol is read to retrieve the document information which is then translated into a humanly discernible form different from that appearing on the document. In one embodiment of the invention, a symbol is applied to sheet music and encoded with the music score printed thereon. The symbol can then be read to produce an audio rendition of the music score. Also, a symbol can be applied to a printed text page and text encoded. The symbol can then be read to produce a vocal reading of the text. Other applications using encoded symbols to uniquely identify or memorialize persons named on credit cards and business cards are disclosed.

摘要: A scanner has a window in its housing through which the scanning beam emerges to impinge upon an indicia to be read. The beam scans in a raster fashion over the window, and as it does so it impinges upon beam position indicating means which locate the position of the beam with respect to the scanner in at least certain portions of the scan pattern. Specifically, the beam position indicating means determines the position of the beam in a direction perpendicular to the overall scanning direction. In a preferred embodiment, the beam position indicating means may comprise one or more CCD's which provide electrical output signals dependent upon the position of the beam when it impinges upon them. Alternatively, the beam position indicating means may comprise passive code means such as a stacked series of bar code symbols. The location of the beam when it scans across the symbol can be determined by the unique pattern of reflections.

摘要: A plurality of the areas of differing light reflectivity of a bar code symbol or the like are simultaneously illuminated using, for example, a beam of light that has an elongate cross-section. The light beam is swept over the symbol to be read in a direction transverse to the elongated dimension of the illuminated region so that a two-dimensional area of the symbol is illuminated over time. The reflected light is sensed by a 1D CCD array. A microprocessor within the scanner provides visual feedback to aid a user in aligning the device, and also provides for a selectable aspect ratio for the image, a selectable image resolution and size, a selectable aspect ratio of the illumination, and a selectable pixel size. All of these options may be programmed within the microprocessor, enabling the device to read a large variety of two-dimensional symbols.

摘要: Performance of an imaging reader for electro-optically reading direct part markings on workpieces is enhanced by uniformly illuminating the markings. An illuminator is operative for emitting illumination light of greater and lesser intensity toward the indicia. A diffuser is operative for diffusing the illumination light en route to the indicia. The diffuser includes a plurality of diffusing elements adjacent the illuminator for diffusing the illumination light of greater intensity more than the illumination light of lesser intensity.
