[Class 39 (i)] An inner tube 7 which tapers uniformly from the middle towards its ends is provided within the main envelope 1 of a luminous discharge tube containing vapour of a metal, such as sodium, which, when excited, absorbs the radiation which is emitted. Absorption of light by the outer layers is reduced and the middle of the discharge tube is made hotter. The tube 7 is closed in a vapour-tight manner but not necessarily hermetically, and may contain an axial wire 9 acting as a heating element, a stabilizing impedance or a connection between auxiliary electrodes 10. The tube 7 is supported by springs 8 and may be silvered internally or externally to act as a reflector, the external coating being subdivided to avoid short-circuiting the discharge. Heat shields 4 and the constrictions 11 are provided to heat the electrode chambers. The envelope 1 may have a heat-insulating sheath surrounding it.
