    摘要: In a CDMA data communication system capable of variable rate transmission, utilization of beam switching techniques decreases the average interference caused by transmissions of a base station to subscriber stations within a cell, and in neighboring cells. Base stations utilize multiple transmit antennas, each transmitting signals at controlled amplitudes and phases, to form transmit signal corresponding to sector divisions. Data and reference signals are transmitted along sector division beams that alternate according to fixed time slots in order to increase system capacity and data rates by maximizing carrier-to-interference ratios (C/I) measured at subscriber stations.

    摘要: A system and method is taught for controlling a power level of transmissions in a communication system. A first station of the communication system transmits signals on a communication channel and a pilot channel. A second station of the communication system measures a signal to noise ratio of the received signal, determines an expected signal to noise ratio of the received signal, determines an indicator in accordance with said measured signal to noise ratio and the expected signal to noise ratio, and transmits the indicator. The indicator is received at the first station the indicator and determines the power level of the next transmission according to said received indicator. Additionally, methods and systems for the measurement of the signal to noise ratio of the received signal, the determination of the expected signal to noise ratio of the received signal, and the determination of the indicator are disclosed.

    摘要: A wireless packet data communications system that includes a number of modem pool transceivers (MPTs), one or more modem pool controllers (MPCs), and one or more servers. Each MPT receives and processes data packets to generate a modulated signal (e.g., a CDMA spread spectrum signal) suitable for transmission over a terrestrial communications link. Each MPC provides call related processing for one or more MPTs. The servers couple to the MPTs and MPCs via an Internet Protocol (IP) back-bone and provide management of the communications system. The IP back-bone further interconnects the MPTs with one or more data networks and includes a number of routers that route data packets between the data networks and the MPTs. Each MPT can couple to two or more routers for redundancy. Each MPT is operated as an element in an IP network and is associated with an IP address that identifies the MPT. One to three MPTs can be deployed at each cell site to provide wireless data service coverage for up to three sectors at the cell site. The MPCs can either be centralized and coupled to the MPTs via the IP back-bone or distributed about the communications system.

    摘要: In a wireless communication system (10) a method and apparatus for inhibiting data transmissions during a data service outage at the access terminal (16). The access terminal (16) transmits an outage indicator to the access network (12) prior to the outage. A data service outage may be due to a page monitor of the voice portion of the system, or to frequency searching during which the access terminal (AT) is not available to receive data. The access network (12) does not transmit data during the outage. In one embodiment, the indicator is a DRC null cover. In an alternate embodiment, the indicator is a DRC having a zero data rate.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for rapidly assigning traffic channels to a plurality of mobile stations in a wide area high-speed packet data cellular communication system. Mobile stations transmit access probes on randomly selected access channels to selected base stations to initiate traffic channel assignments. The access probe comprises a pilot preamble, a traffic channel request, and a pilot/data request channel (DRC). The pilot preamble allows the selected base station to easily detect the access probe transmission. The traffic channel request includes data that identifies the mobile station. Immediately after transmitting the traffic channel request, the mobile station begins communicating with the base station on both the forward and reverse communication links. The selected base station immediately supervises the mobile station's transmission power. The mobile station selects from a group of available power control sub-channels. The mobile station selects an available channel and an associated power control sub-channel from the list.
