    摘要: The color gamut of a image display device is improved by the introduction of a broad band stop filter in combination with a band pass filter, a first light field and a second light field. The first light field is generated by a first and a second light source, emitting blue and green light, respectively. The second light field is generated by said second light source and a third light source emitting red light. The color gamut is improved since the band pass filter facilitates a displacement of the color point of said second light source towards shorter wavelengths, as the band pass filter transmits some of the blue light in the first light field. Similarly, a displacement towards longer wavelengths is facilitated, as the filter transmits some of the red light of said second light field. Hence, four primary colors are generated by only three light sources.

The reflective display panel (9) comprises a redirection sheet (14) having a plurality of redirecting structures (19, 20) each being configured to redirect ambient light incident thereon towards an adjacent modulative portion (15, 16a-b). Through the invention, the portion of the light which would otherwise have hit the non-modulative portion of the pixel and would not have contributed constructively to the image forming of the display panel is instead directed towards the modulative portion of the pixel and can thereby contribute to the brightness as well as to the contrast of the reflective display panel.

    摘要: The present invention relates to a color display device, comprising at least two light sources (16, 17), having different radiance spectra, and a liquid crystal light valve layer (14). The light sources (16, 17) are activated sequentially and the light valve layer is provided with driving signals (d1, d2) in such a way that it obtains a strong wavelength dependence. This allows the display device to produce primary colors without the provision of color filters. This provides a less complex display, which is suitable for mobile applications and provides high brightness.

    摘要: A reflective display, comprising a plurality of pixels (10), each having a first electrode, a light-modifying layer (12), and a second electrode (3; 16) arranged to enable formation of an electric field in the light-modifying layer (12) through application of a voltage between the electrodes. The pixel (10) further includes an active portion (16) which is switchable between light-modifying states by means of said electric field, and an inactive portion (17). The inactive portion (17) is arranged for reflecting light so as to direct at least a fraction of incoming light (20) impinging on the inactive portion (17) towards the active portion (16). As a result, a contrast ratio of the reflective display is improved, since light is now directed from the inactive portion towards the active portion and thus contributes to the displayed image as observed by a viewer.

    摘要: A transflective Liquid Crystal Display device has a liquid crystalline (LC) cell with reflective portions (101 R) and transmissive portions (101 T). The LCD device has a dual cell-gap design, the cell gap (dT) for the transmissive portions differs from the cell gap (dR) for the reflective portions. According to the invention, this cell gap difference is effected by means of an optical retarder (120) inside the LC cell. A thickness of said optical retarder (120) is such as to compensate the difference in cell gaps. Preferably, the optical retarder is a patterned retarder extending essentially only over the reflective portions (101 R) of the cell, and having quarter wave retardance.

The first colour absorbing component has a colour (C) at a point lying substantially between the green and blue regions of an (x,y) chromaticity diagram, and the second colour absorbing component has a colour (O) at a point lying substantially between the green and red regions of an (x,y) chromaticity diagram. The invention provides a colour active light shutter layer with only two colour components. One is selected to be near cyan and the other is selected to be near orange, and these together enable a range of colours to be produced which enables good quality colour images to be produced.
