    摘要: A fiber optic cable with at least one optical transmission component having a nominal radius, and at least two strength components, at least one of the strength components being generally adjacent to the optical transmission component. At least one of the strength components having a nominal radius that is less than the nominal radius of the optical transmission component. A cable jacket surrounds the optical transmission component and the strength components. The optical transmission component being generally disposed adjacent generally flat surfaces of the cable jacket. The cable can be made by an extrusion tooling apparatus with a tip and a die, the extrusion tooling apparatus being operative to extrude jacketing material about the strength components and the optical transmission component. The tip has an orifice defined within the end of the tip for receiving the strength and optical transmission components therein. The tip further includes at least two generally flat and generally parallel surfaces on opposite sides of said tip, and arcuate sections that generally complement the shape of the strength components.

    摘要: A fiber optic cable having strength assemblies (30) adjacent a tube having at least one optical fiber therein, at least one of the strength assemblies including a strength member for imparting crush resistance to the cable. The strength member is generally coupled to a first jacket, and may be surrounded by a single jacket, or by an armor tape and a second jacket. The strength member may be disposed in a recess of the tube. When crush loads are applied to the fiber optic cable, the stresses created in the cable are advantageously distributed by strength assemblies (30) whereby stress concentrations and undue deflection of the cable in response to the crush loads are avoided. The arrangement of the cable components and strength assemblies (30) inhibits slippage and/or warping of the components under stress, and thereby evenly distributes the stress for preventing crush induced attenuation in the optical fibers.

Strength sections (6,7) are defined between the optical-component and the cable jacket, the strength sections comprising generally crescent-like cross sections. The generally crescent-like cross sections have respective generally concave and generally convex faces (9,10). The generally concave face (9) has a general center that is preferably aligned with the longitudinal axis of the cable, and the generally convex face (10) has a general center that is preferably offset from a longitudinal.axis of the fiber optic cable. The convex faces subtend respective angles (∝) of about 45° to about 160°. The cable jacket (8) defining contact interfaces (11,12) with the optical component, the contact interfaces being respectively disposed between the strength sections (6,7). A fiber optic cable having relatively large, force-absorbing transverse dimensions is also disclosed.

    摘要: An improved self-supporting fiber optic cable is provided that includes a cable section having at least one optical fiber and a jacket surrounding the at least one optical fiber, and a support section having at least one strength member extending in a lengthwise direction and an overlying jacket that includes a number of jacket segments spaced lengthwise along the at least one strength member. As a result of the lengthwise spacing of the jacket segments, portions of the at least one strength member are at least partially exposed. The jackets of the cable and support sections are connected, such as by an intermittent web. A method for manufacturing a fiber optic cable having a support section with an intermittent or semi-intermittent jacket is also provided which relies upon the periodic extrusion of extrudate about the at least one strength member to form the jacket segments that are spaced apart in a lengthwise direction along the at least one strength member. Alternatively, a thin coating of jacket material can exist between jacket segments.

    摘要: A fiber optic cable having strength assemblies (30) adjacent a tube for imparting crush resistance to the cable, at least one of the strength assemblies including a strength member in contact with a tube having at least one optical fiber therein. The strength member is coupled to a first jacket, and may be surrounded a single jacket, or by an armor tape and a second jacket. The strength member may be disposed in a recess of the tube. When crush loads are applied to the fiber optic cable, the stresses created in the cable are advantageously distributed by strength assemblies (30) whereby stress concentrations and undue deflection of the cable in response to the crush loads are avoided. Tight coupling and minimized gaps between the cable components in strength assemblies (30) inhibits slippage and/or warping of the components under stress, and thereby evenly distribute the stress for preventing crush induced attenuation in the optical fibers.
