    摘要: The present invention provides a stay-on-tab end closure having a displaceable tear panel defined by a frangible score with a sloping segment and a non-frangible hinge segment. A curvilinear bead is formed entirely in an exposed area of the central panel formed by a void region of the tab webbing. The nose of the tab has a generally asymmetric shaped outer edge with a second portion extending further over the tear panel toward the curvilinear transition zone of the score. The invention further provides a tab with an asymmetrical thickness, with a thickened portion adjacent the second scoreline segment, and further provides a bead segment positioned under a side portion of the tab nose adjacent the second segment of the score. The present invention also provides an end with a hinge region of the tab adapted to bend at a hinge line, the hinge line intersecting the central longitudinal axis of the tab at an oblique angle. The invention also provides a stepped profile of the panel outer edge with substantially parallel countersink walls and a chuck wall angularly extending from below the panel height.

    摘要: In a method of forming a beverage can end wherein a beverage can end shell has a curl defining a perimeter of the can end, a chuckwall extending downwardly and radially inwardly from the curl, a generally U-shaped countersink joining the chuckwall to an outer peripheral edge of a center panel, a method of forming an arcuate chuckwall in the beverage can end shell is described. The method of forming the arcuate chuckwall comprises the steps of providing a partially formed can end, providing an upper tooling having an annular, generally arcuate segment, and providing a lower tooling having a circumferential, generally arcuate, outwardly convex segment in at least partial alignment with the annular, generally arcuate segment of the upper tooling. The annular, generally arcuate segment of the upper tooling and the circumferential, generally arcuate, outwardly convex segment of the lower tooling are brought into engagement with a public side and a product side of the partially formed can end, respectively. A portion of the partially formed can end is reformed to form a circumferential, generally arcuate, outwardly convex segment located between an upper bend in the can end having a center of curvature above a public side of the can end and a lower bend in the partially formed can end having a center of curvature below the public side of the partially formed can end.

    摘要: Ends for cans are made in a single press, eliminating the need for separate shell and conversion presses, balancers, track work, and other equipment, as compared to existing can end manufacturing systems, while reducing floor space and capital investment requirements for installation of a new can end line. A sheet of end material or stock is introduced into the press and fed to a series of work stations. The sheet is maintained in a substantially continuous and void free state as the work stations perform forming operations on the sheet of material to form one or more ends therein. After the forming operation is complete, the end is ejected from the press. The maintenance of the sheet of material in a substantially continuous and void free state permits precise movement of the sheet through the press, and registration of the sheet relative to the tooling in the press. This precise movement and maintenance of registration results in a single press capable of operation at high speeds to produce large volumes of ends, while doing so in a reliable and cost-effective manner. In a preferred embodiment, the typical shell conversion operations are performed first on the sheet of end material, while maintaining the sheet in a substantially planar and void free state, followed by a shell forming operation in which the panel and countersink features are formed and the completed end blanked in a single stroke at the very end of the forming operations.
