Abstract: The liquid crystal display panel includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer provided between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first substrate includes a first dielectric substrate, a first electrode and a second electrode provided on the first dielectric substrate and capable of generating a horizontal electric field in the liquid crystal layer, and a first alignment film being in contact with the liquid crystal layer. The second substrate includes a second dielectric substrate and a second alignment film provided on the second dielectric substrate and being in contact with the liquid crystal layer. The first alignment film has an azimuthal anchoring strength lower than the second alignment film. The liquid crystal layer includes a nematic liquid crystal material and a polymer network.

Abstract: A display apparatus according to one embodiment comprises pixels each comprising a liquid crystal display element (LC element) and an organic EL display element (EL element). The EL element comprises an anode and a cathode electrically separated from each electrode of the LC element. Each pixel comprises a first transistor which changes the magnitude of a current flowing through the EL element based on the potential of a first bus line; a second transistor which electrically separates the first bus line and the LC element; and a third transistor which electrically connects the first and second transistor with the first bus line. A method for driving a display device according to one embodiment reduces the potential difference between the pixel electrode and the counter electrode before turning off the second transistor during switching from display by the LC element to display by the EL element.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display panel (100A) includes a first polarizing plate (22) and a first phase difference plate (32a) disposed on an observer side, and a second polarizing plate (24) and a second phase difference plate (34a) disposed on a back surface side. Δnd of a liquid crystal layer having a homogeneous alignment when no electrical field is applied is 360 nm or greater and 490 nm or less, and an in-plane retardation R1 of the first phase difference plate is 100 nm or greater and 160 nm or less. A thickness direction retardation of at least one of the first and second phase difference plates has a negative value. The slow axes of the first and second phase difference plates are substantially parallel to each other and substantially orthogonal to an azimuthal direction of the liquid crystal director.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display panel (100) according to an embodiment includes: a first polarizer (22) and a first phase plate (32) on the viewer's side; and a second polarizer (24) and a second phase plate (34) on the rear face side. A liquid crystal layer, which takes a homogeneous alignment in the absence of an applied electric field, has a Δnd of not less than 360 nm and not more than 490 nm; a retardation R1 of the first phase plate is not less than 100 nm and not more than 160 nm; and a retardation R2 of the second phase plate is not less than 200 nm and not more than 360 nm. The slow axes of the first and second phase plates are substantially parallel to each other and substantially orthogonal to the azimuth direction of the director of the liquid crystal.

Abstract: The present invention provides a transflective display device which is high in transmittance, can secure sufficient brightness in display, and can display black. A transflective display device 1 includes a display panel 2 and a backlight 3. The display panel 2 includes a substrate 10 having an electrode 12. a substrate 20 having an electrode 22, and an optical modulation layer 30 containing shape-anisotropic members 32. A frequency of a voltage to be applied to the electrodes 12 and 22 is changed so as to rotate the shape-anisotropic members 32. When the shape-anisotropic members 32 are oriented such that their major axes extend in parallel with one of the substrates on which the shape-anisotropic members 32 abut, multiple reflection of incoming light is caused, and thus black is displayed.
