摘要: A device for therapeutically treating a desired region of a patient's body with a nonambient temperature fluid includes a fluid feed reservoir, a fluid collection reservoir, and a fluid flowpath therebetween. The flowpath is made up of a heat transfer pad placed over the desired treatment region, an inlet line leading from the feed reservoir to the pad, and an outlet line leading from the pad to the collection reservoir. In operation, the feed reservoir is charged with a nonambient temperature fluid and maintained at a height substantially greater than the height of the collection reservoir to provide a fluid head sufficient to transport the fluid from the feed reservoir to the collection reservoir across the flowpath. In so doing, the pad provides therapeutic treatment to the region of the body that it contacts. The temperature of the pad is controlled by maintaining a height differential between the fluid levels in the feed reservoir and the collection reservoir.

摘要: A device for use as a cast for orthopedic leg injuries is disclosed which has a plurality of inflatable, adjustable pressure air chambers contained within a resilient outer support casing which may easily be installed around a patient's lower extremity to control tissue edema and minor undisplaced fractures, acute sprains, and ruptures of supporting ligaments. The cast apparatus of the present invention uses three sets of air chambers to support the lower leg, the ankle, and the lower foot, respectively, of a patient. The ankle portion of the cast apparatus has special support apparatus designed to provide excellent ankle support in a unique manner. Splint members may also be used in conjunction with the cast apparatus of the present invention, with a variety of techniques being used to mount the splint members onto the cast apparatus. The device can also readily be used as a cast for upper extremities.

摘要: A device is provided for therapeutically treating a desired region of a patient's body with a nonambient temperature fluid which is circulated through a pad having a tortuous fluid pathway which is positioned on the treatment region. The device has fluid inlet and outlet lines, each having an end connected to the pad and an opposite end positioned in a reservoir containing the nonambient temperature fluid, thereby providing fluid communication between the pad and the reservoir, and enabling continuous circulation of the fluid therebetween. Fluid drive is provided by a submersible pump at the end of the fluid inlet line in the reservoir. Temperature control of the pad is enabled by an in-line valve and temperature monitor positioned in the outlet line.

摘要: An inflatable hand splint for treatment of patient with arthritic or stroke paralyzed wrists employs a pliable wrist element attached at a first end to an inflatable ball. The ball has an external air valve for attaching to a hand operated air pump. The second end of the pliable element extends downwardly along the underside of the patient's wrist and is strapped to the patient's forearm with a pair of straps engaged by hook and loop material. A front end of a hard plastic support member is inserted between the fingers and palmer portion of the patient's hand. The rear end of the support member is located below the pliable wrist element and is also strapped to the patient's forearm. The deflated ball is inserted under the patient's finger tips and inflated to move the fingers away from the palmer region.

摘要: An anatomical compression device including a flexible, expandible envelope which contains a pair of chemical agents which form a gas when mixed. In use, the envelope encircles a body part, such as an injured limb, and the chemical agents are mixed by manual manipulation of the envelope, creating a gas which expands the envelope and exerts a compressive force on the limb. The compression device can serve as a splint for broken bones, as a pressure dressing for the control of bleeding, or as a treatment device for minimizing the effect of snake venom or a snake bite victim.
