A coolant pump supplies coolant flow to a part to be machined on a machine tool, and to a cutting tool holding device. In one embodiment the tool holder is part of a self compensating tool holding device which allows the cutting tool to float in position until the coolant supply forces a piston against a collet which grasp the tool holder in a fixed position. In a second embodiment, the tool holder is part of a device to cause linear motion of the cutting tool by using the coolant flow to force the piston shaped tool holder, and cutting tool thereon, through a cylindrical bore in a main body, and extend outward from the main body. In yet another embodiment, the tool holder is mounted to a hydraulic motor which uses the coolant flow to rotate the tool holder and cutting tool thereon.

A chuck assembly and drill tool for a deep hole drilling press wherein the shank of the drill is of great length and slidably received within the chuck assembly to various depths such that complete removal of the drill for the purpose of substitution with drills of different lengths is avoided. The invention also teaches means for securing the drill within the chuck at various points along the shank's length. Prevention of lubricating and cooling oil leakage is accomplished by novel packing means which are also incorporated into the chuck assembly. In another embodiment, a separate insert may be fitted to the chuck assembly to permit reception of shanks of varying diameter. Both embodiments prevent excessive vibration, fallout and whiplashing of the enclosed drill tool.

A resilient material is disposed between the gripping jaws and holds the jaws in a predetermined longitudinally and angularly spaced relation about the centerline axis of a collet. A continuous outer diameter seal is disposed circumferentially about the conical outer surface of the collet. The outer diameter seal is formed integral with the resilient material. A device for transferring a pressure medium has a first stationary component and a second component that is inserted into the first stationary component such that it is rotatably drivable therein. A first annular chamber is defined between the first stationary component and the second component and has a first and a second axial end. The first axial end is delimited at least partially by the first stationary component and the second axial end is delimited at least partially by the second component. An inlet line and an outlet line are connected to the first annular chamber. The outlet line guides the pressure medium to a consuming device. Radially extending sealing slots are defined between the first stationary component and the second component at the first and the second axial ends whereby the sealing slots have adjustable slot widths. The first and the second sealing slots are simultaneously adjustable into a same direction with respect to the slot width by an axial relative adjusting movement of the first stationary component and the second component.

In a self-reversing tapping attachment an improved coolant system includes at least one fluid flow orifice at the end of a fluid flow conduit contained in a drive spindle member and further includes a fluid contact member for generating force to prevent interference with the drive spindle member prior to tapping a hole. Provision is further made for self-correction of any tendency for back pressure of fluid flow to interfere with motion of the drive spindle member by provision for covering the fluid flow orifice during motion under back pressure, thereby reducing such pressure. A collector chamber and exit orifice for expulsion to ambient of coolant fluid prevent invasion of the inner mechanism by coolant under back pressure.

A design of a drill and a method for using the same are disclosed. A groove is formed on the outer periphery of an adapter which is connected to the electric motor. A fluid supply line is also formed on the adapter so as to lead fluid to the groove. Openings are provided at a proximal end of a shank, adjacent to the groove. Guide flutes extending from the openings to a tip of the shank are formed at an outer periphery of the shank so as to define passages for leading the fluid introduced from the openings to the tip of the shank to be sprayed upon the cutting debris. Exhaust ports for discharging the debris and exhaust passages for leading the debris through the shank to the exhaust ports are provided at the adapter. The guide flutes can be formed with milling machine or the like.When the drill is used, the drill is pressed against a material while being rotated. Then, the fluid is introduced into the passages between the shank and a sleeve and is sprayed upon the cutting debris. A suction is applied through a central portion of the shank to remove the cutting debris. The suction is strong enough to suck granular abrasives into the drilling area from outside the drill. The abrasive effect of the abrasives promotes self sharpening of the cutting teeth.

A rotary tool holder of the type including a stationary shell adapted to be reciprocally positioned within a bushing plate and a shaft mounted rotatably within the stationary shell. An annular space is provided between the shaft and the shell and the shell includes an enlarged diameter collar portion proximate one end of the shell and a reduced diameter pilot portion extending from the collar portion to the other end of the shell. The pilot portion is slidably received in the bushing plate and the collar portion receives a pressurized coolant fitting. Needle bearings are provided in the annular space between the shell and the shaft proximate the pilot portion and a pair of annular seals are provided in the annular space between the shell and the shaft proximate the collar portion. The annular seals are positioned on opposite sides of a radial passage formed through the collar portion and through the shaft for communication with a central axial bore in the shaft. Pressurized fluid is delivered through the collar portion and through the radial port in the shaft to the central axial bore in the shaft from when it is delivered to the cutting tool carried by the shaft for delivery through a central bore in the tool to the cutting face where it acts to cool the cutting face and break up and remove chips from the cutting face.
