摘要： A character shielding-preventive pointer instrument for automotive gauges includes a polarizer film having permeability or non-permeability characteristics selectively depending on whether power is supplied thereto. The polarizer film is attached on a lower surface of a front end portion of a pointer needle positioned just above characters of a character plate. Whether or not power is supplied to the polarizer film is controlled depending on the current position of the pointer needle by a micro computer such that the polarizer film is permeable to light when the pointer needle is located above a character of the character plate so that light emitted from the character plate passes through the pointer needle through the polarizer film to prevent the pointer needle from shielding the character.

摘要： A mechanical dial indicating gauge or meter that, without mechanical loading, optoelectronically detects and encodes the pointer position as a digital signal by use of a technique of distributed point position latching. Counter means drives a circuit which cylically sequentially lights LED's along a scale and the count is latched that corresponds to current counter position when a detector on the scale pointer is activated during the sequential lighting. This latched count provides the digital signal of pointer position. This digital signal may then by transmitted to remote indicators, controllers, computers, and/or may be compared to preset values yielding set point outputs. An electrical lead for the detector includes a spiral loosely surrounding the pointer stem.

摘要： A device is provided for a meter having an indicator, e.g. a pointer, and which detects the presence or absence of the meter pointer at one or more set points or between two set points. The device does not alter the operation of the meter and may be coupled to an alarm or other signal, or it may be used to actuate a mechanism under control of the meter. The device comprises at least one light-emitting diode which produces radiation which falls on a specific area of the meter face and on the meter pointer (if it is within that area) and is reflected from the meter face (and the pointer) to a phototransistor or other suitable receiver which "reads" the signal produced by the radiation reflected from the meter face and the pointer, if present in the area read. The device is mounted so that it can be moved to any desired area of the meter face. Preferably the device is mounted externally to the meter. However, it may be enclosed within the usual meter housing, without altering the operation of the meter.
