    摘要: A workpiece-holding plug has six sector-shaped segments that expand outwardly in a radial direction when in use and in contact with a lathe center. The segments have tapered outer wall portions which assume a precise cylindrical shape when the plug is expanded so that the central axis of the lathe center is maintained in precise concentric relationship to the central axis of the workpiece. The plug is of a particular construction which ensures that each of the segments shifts radially outwardly an equal distance, and yet has sufficient resiliency for self-contraction when the work operation is completed so that the plug may be readily removed from the workpiece. The plug has particular utility for holding a press roller on a lathe during reconditioning of the outer rubber surface of the roller.

    摘要: The tailstock of a universal grinding machine has a lower part which is affixed to the frame at a level below the indexible head for a set of grinding spindles, and an upper part which supports one or more dead centers and is indexible relative to the lower part about a horizontal axis extending at right angles to the axis or axes of the center or centers. The upper part of the tailstock has several facets and the number of such facets exceeds the number of dead centers by at least one. Each center is mounted on a discrete facet and the unoccupied facet is indexed to a position below the material removing station of the grinding machine when the head is to be indexed whereby the center or centers on the upper part of the tailstock cannot interfere with movements of the selected grinding wheel to and from the material removing station. The head can support a grinding wheel for removal of material from cylindrical external surfaces of workpieces, a grinding wheel for removal of material from cylindrical internal surfaces of workpieces, and a grinding wheel for removal of material from flat surfaces.

    摘要: A hydraulic circuit for use on a turning machine (10) having a quill (32) which is movable to an extended and retracted position for detecting, through pressure drop, when the quill (32) is fully retracted or extended and engaging a workpiece. The quill (32) is positioned by a hydraulic cylinder (40) which is operated from a hydraulic power supply (60). A pressure actuated switch (48) is connected to one of the operating ports on the hydraulic cylinder (40) and a orifice (70) is connected to the same port. By detecting when the pressure sensitive switch (48) is activated with respect to positioning of the hydraulic cylinder (40) proper functioning of the quill (32) can be determined. A timer (90) circuit is provided for determining that the pressure sensitive switch (48) changes position within a set time period after the hydraulic circuit is activated to change position of the quill (32).

    摘要: An improved machine tool includes a tailstock having a center assembly which is movable between operating and retracted positions by a piston and cylinder assembly. When the center assembly is in the operating position, a main axis of the center assembly is aligned with the axis of rotation of a workpiece. In the retracted position, the center assembly is offset to one side of the workpiece. When the center assembly is in the operating position, a tailstock motor is activated to press the center assembly against the outer end of the workpiece to thereby support the workpiece in a known manner. A control system coordinates movement of the center assembly with movement of a turret to avoid interference between the tailstock and tools mounted on the turret.
