    摘要: Disclosed is a control mechanism and device for conditioning a typewriter to backspace on every other depression of a keylever and at the same time to prevent printing on all depressions of keylevers. Additionally, the typewriter is conditioned to not print on those cycles in which a backspace movement is not included.This control mechanism and system allows the typist to key headings and other materials which would normally be centered in a no print mode and upon the completion of keying the entry once and switching into a normal typing mode, the typewriter is properly positioned with respect to the page for immediate rekeying of the heading or entry to provide centered copy.

    摘要: A method and mechanism for automatically performing typewriter functions such as backspacing and disabling the escapement mechanism of a typewriter. A ribbon cartridge carrying actuating abutments is inserted into the typewriter whereupon the abutments engage a mechanism to actuate a selected function as for example the backspace mechanism and also engage another mechanism to disable the escapement mechanism. Particularly adaptable to correcting typing errors, the present invention will minimize the manipulations now necessary to perform an error correcting operation. Having typed an erroneous character, the operator simply inserts a ribbon cartridge containing the actuating abutments. One of the abutments contacts an actuating mechanism within the typewriter to backspace the carriage. The second abutment contacts a second actuating mechanism within the typewriter to disable the escapement mechanism to prevent carriage movement during error correction or until the ribbon cartridge is removed. Other selected typewriter functions can also be actuated by cartridge insertion.

    摘要: A method and mechanism for automatically performing typewriter functions such as backspacing a carriage. The backspace mechanism is actuated by the insertion and removal of a ribbon cartridge that is placed on and guided by a ribbon cartridge platform and is especially suited for use in conjunction with the correction of erroneously typed characters.The ribbon cartridge carries a pair of cam surfaces that engage a pair of typewriter backspace coupled cam surfaces to actuate a backspace function upon insertion and again upon removal of the ribbon cartridge. Therefore, automatic multiple backspacing of the typewriter carriage occurs when performing an error correcting operation simply by inserting and removing a correction ribbon cartridge.Although a backspace function has been selected for purposes of demonstration, the hereafter disclosed embodiment may be utilized to actuate other typewriter functions upon the insertion and removal of the ribbon cartridge.

    摘要: A mechanism is disclosed for the automatic erasing of typing errors utilizing a fully serialized and automated correction apparatus where the correction is accomplished by a single backspace operation allowing both the erasure of the erroneously typed letter and the typing of the proper letter. The backspace operation repositions the typewriter carriage for the correction of the erroneous letter and at the same time inhibits the escapement of the carriage for a single print cycle allowing the corrected letter to be printed over the correction without requiring an additional backspace operation. The escapement mechanism is re-engaged during the correction cycle so that the carriage advances of the print cycle.
