A sliding-blade water jet propulsion apparatus has an oval-shaped chamber and a water channel extending generally tangential to the chamber with a cylindrical rotor rotatably mounted eccentrically in the chamber. The rotor has at least two rectangular blades slidably mounted in slots extending through the cylindrical rotor in mutually perpendicular relation and each blade is independently movable relative to the other in a radial direction. Each blade has a guide element extending from opposed sides and through the opposed end walls of the rotor which are slidably received in guide grooves in the chamber end walls. The guide elements traveling in the guide grooves cause the blades to extend and retract radially with their outer ends following the inner periphery of the chamber side wall and a portion of the water channel with a constant clearance. In one embodiment, the rotor is rotated by a working gas entering the chamber and upon expansion effectuating gas pressure on one side of the blades which causes water in the water channel to be expelled by the opposite side of the blade without substantial mixing of the gas with the water, and as the rotor rotates more water is drawn into the water channel. In another embodiment, the rotor is rotated by an external power source connected to the shaft of the rotor rather than by a working gas.

An adjustable two-dimensional nozzle is disclosed in which simplified control means are located away from the flow of gasses through the nozzle. The nozzle includes a movable frame located outside of fixed sidewalls and has pivotally attached thereto a pair of upstream or converging nozzle flaps. Upstream edges of the upstream flaps are attached to the movable frame such that the flaps pivot about axes extending substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle. Downstream or diverging flaps are attached to the downstream edges of the upstream flaps such that these flaps also pivot about axes extending substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the nozzle. A cam member extends between each of the movable frames and each downstream flap to control the angular variations of the flaps during movement of the frame. The flap arrangements are symmetrically arranged with respect to a plane passing through the longitudinal axis of the nozzle, such that translational movement of the frames will alter the cross-section of the nozzle in a symmetrical manner with respect to the plane. If the frame is rotated about its pivot attachment, the nozzle flaps will be asymmetrically adjusted and may be utilized to vector the thrust of the gasses emanating from the nozzle.

A control system for water jet ship propulsion apparatus of the type having reverser bucket apparatus which is selectively and controllably movable into the path of a driving jet to reverse the thrust of the jet. The invention is characterized in the use of plural potentiometers connected to a single control throttle, one of the potentiometers acting to control the driving engine for the propulsion apparatus and the other acting to control the position of the reverser bucket apparatus. Both potentiometers employ shorted sections such that the driving engine will run at idle speed on either side of a neutral setting while the reverser bucket apparatus is moved from a fully-retracted to a fully extended position for reverse thrust. Once the reverser bucket apparatus reaches one of its two extreme positions, engine speed can be increased with increased thrust. In the engine idle region, reverser bucket modulation of the jet stream can be effected to give forward and reverse boat speed control at the engine idle setting.
